Marathi A1 — A1 Marathi

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Marathi A1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a child, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can greet, count to twenty, read a shop sign.
A child learning Marathi at level A1 (child)
A1 — on the ladder this level is a child, age 7: by the end of it the learner can greet, count to twenty, read a shop sign. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A1 is finished

 • Build level-appropriate comprehension and production.
 • Use Devanagari with romanisation and accurate English meaning.
 • Adapt Marathi to age, relationship, setting, and register.

कपडे आणि रंग

A colour copies the noun it describes: निळा शर्ट, निळी साडी, निळे स्वेटर. Colours in -ा inflect like that; लाल, गुलाबी and केशरी never change. घालणे is the verb for wearing.

WordSay itMeaning

Agreement of colours

Marathi has three genders, and a colour adjective copies the gender of its noun: masculine -ा, feminine -ी, neuter -े. Colours borrowed as they are — लाल, गुलाबी, केशरी — stay the same with every noun.

Marathi A1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Marathi A1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Marathi is written in Devanagari, with letters and habits Hindi does not have: ळ, the retroflex l of फळ (fruit) and शाळा (school); the candra signs ॅ and ॉ that carry English vowels into बँक and कॉलेज; and no capitals at all, so a sentence opens on the same letter it would use in the middle. The ळ is the quickest way to hear the difference: मराठी itself, and every Marathi speaker's name for the language, uses a sound that a Hindi speaker hears as a plain l.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

What it says: I am Meera. I live in Pune. I get up at six in the morning and make tea. My mother is a teacher and my father runs a shop. Every morning I study, then I go to college. In the evening I go for a walk on the ground. I like reading books. At night, after dinner, I write down my day. On Saturday I meet my friends and we chat. On Sunday everyone at home eats together.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged mr-IN; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

मीरा: नमस्कार, तुम्ही कसे आहात?
अर्णव: मी मजेत आहे, धन्यवाद. तुम्ही कशी आहात?
मीरा: मी सुद्धा छान आहे. हा तुमचा मुलगा आहे का?
अर्णव: हो, त्याचे नाव ओम आहे. तो आता शाळेत जातो.
मीरा: छान! माझी मुलगी पण शाळेत आहे.

What it says: Meera: Hello, how are you? Arnav: I am well, thank you. How are you? Meera: I am fine too. Is this your son? Arnav: Yes, his name is Om. He goes to school now. Meera: Nice! My daughter is at school too.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • तू कुठे राहतो? → तू कुठे राहतोस? तू takes its own ending: राहतोस for a male, राहतेस for a female. राहतो belongs to मी, तो.
 • हे माझा भाऊ आहे. → हा माझा भाऊ आहे. The demonstrative agrees with the noun: हा भाऊ, ही बहीण, हे पुस्तक.
 • मला भूक आहे. → मला भूक लागली आहे. Hunger has its own verb in Marathi: भूक लागते. भूक आहे just states that hunger exists.

Your task

Introduce yourself to a Marathi classmate Write five Marathi sentences: your name, the city you live in, what you do in the morning, one thing you like, and one question back to the reader. Use आहे / आहात / आहेत correctly, choose तुम्ही as your address, and read the five sentences aloud twice.

After A1: the A1+ checkpoint

A1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Marathi A1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A1+ when you can ask for things, give a phone number, name the days.
