Who this level is for. B1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a young adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast.
A young adult learning Marathi at level B1 (youth)
B1 — on the ladder this level is a young adult, age 20: by the end of it the learner can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B1 is finished

 • Build level-appropriate comprehension and production.
 • Use Devanagari with romanisation and accurate English meaning.
 • Adapt Marathi to age, relationship, setting, and register.

बैठकीत मत मांडणे

A meeting runs on मत मांडणे, सहमत होणे and आक्षेप घेणे. Marathi softens disagreement before it states it: मला वाटते की …, पण …. वाटणे takes the dative मला and stays neuter, and an objection is phrased as मला आक्षेप आहे, which is politer than a flat refusal. A counter-proposal opens with तरी or पण.

WordSay itMeaning
मतmatopinion
सहमतsahmatin agreement
आक्षेपaakshepobjection
मांडणेmaandneto put forward, to state
मुद्दाmuddapoint, item
Putting an opinion

मला वाटते is the standard softener and takes a की clause. सहमत आहे states agreement and stands after the thing agreed with (पहिल्या मुद्द्याशी सहमत आहे). An objection is मला आक्षेप आहे, and a proposal uses the -ावे form (करावे, ठेवावे).

मला वाटते की … · मी सहमत आहे · मला आक्षेप आहे

मला दुसऱ्या टप्प्यावर आक्षेप आहे.Mala dusrya tappyavar aakshep ahe.I have an objection to the second stage.
Watch out:
 • मला वाटतो की हे बरोबर आहे. → मला वाटते की हे बरोबर आहे. वाटणे stays neuter with मला: वाटते.
 • मी सहमत आहे तुमच्या मताशी. → मी तुमच्या मताशी सहमत आहे. सहमत आहे comes after the thing agreed with.

अर्ज आणि मुलाखत

An application and an interview move into the formal register: अनुभव, कौशल्य, अपेक्षा. Experience is counted in वर्षे and stated with the perfect केले आहे; जबाबदारी is feminine, so सांभाळली agrees with it. अपेक्षा is feminine too — अपेक्षा आहे, अपेक्षा नाही.

Talking about experience

A counted period takes the plural वर्षे (चार वर्षे, दहा वर्षे). The perfect केले आहे presents the experience as still standing, and the object decides the ending of the verb: जबाबदारी सांभाळली, टीम सांभाळली, अहवाल सांभाळला.

Recall drills — 126 more questions from the B1 words

Marathi B1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Marathi B1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

The first public Marathi play, Sita Swayamvar by Vishnudas Bhave, was staged at Sangli in 1843 and grew out of the travelling troupes of the time; by the 1950s the Marathi stage had musicals, farces and history plays, and after it the experimental theatre of Vijay Tendulkar and Satish Alekar. What marks it is that the rehearsal is a public institution: the नाट्यसंमेलन and the drama school culture around Pune and Mumbai keep an audience for a play that runs for years.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

What it says: Last week there was an important meeting at our office. I had prepared the report, but the presentation was my colleague's responsibility. She set out the figures clearly and answered the questions directly. The managers raised objections on two points — time and cost. We decided to recheck both figures and answer at the next meeting. At the end of the meeting everyone agreed on one decision: the work would be done in two stages. In that meeting I learnt that it is timely preparation and clear answers that build trust.

What it says: Manager: Will the report reach me by tomorrow evening? Newcomer: Yes, but two figures still have to be checked. Manager: All right, check them and let me know. And do mention the deadline. Newcomer: Certainly. I will send the report tomorrow morning itself. Manager: Please write both the time and the date in the e-mail.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • मी उद्या येतो. → मी उद्या येईन. A promise about tomorrow takes the future: येईन, जाईल, कळवीन. येतो describes a habit.
 • कृपया अहवाल पाठव. → कृपया अहवाल पाठवा. कृपया goes with the तुम्ही imperative in -ा: पाठवा, बसा, सांगा. पाठव belongs to तू.
 • माझं सहकारी आला. → माझा सहकारी आला. The possessive agrees with the noun it owns: माझा सहकारी, माझी टीम, माझे काम.

Your task

Write a short office note in Marathi Write five Marathi sentences for a colleague: what has happened, who is doing what by when, one polite request with कृपया … करा, one promise in the future tense (कळवीन, पाठवीन), and one closing line. Keep the register polite and the verbs in the तुम्ही form.
