शैली आणि उपरोध
Irony in Marathi leans on उपरोध and वक्रोक्ती: the sentence says the opposite and trusts the reader to hear it. The markers are काय तर …, किती चांगले! and the rhetorical question; वक्रोक्ती is the older name for the same figure — the word with the meaning turned under it. A formal text keeps one ironical stroke, usually at the end.
| Word | Say it | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| शैली | shaili | style |
| उपरोध | uparodh | irony |
| वक्रोक्ती | vakrokti | oblique speech |
| छटा | chhata | nuance, shade |
| उपरोधपूर्ण | uparodhpurn | ironical |
उपरोध puts the praise where the criticism belongs and lets the next sentence carry the point; वक्रोक्ती names the same turn in poetics. The adjective is formed with -पूर्ण (उपरोधपूर्ण, अर्थपूर्ण), and a rhetorical question closes the paragraph without asserting anything.
काय तर … · किती चांगले! · मग हे यश म्हणायचे का?| Word | Say it | Meaning |

| शब्द तेच, अर्थ मात्र उलटा. | Shabd tech, arth maatra ulta. | The same words, the meaning turned around. |

भाषांतर आणि अर्थ
Translation keeps three things honest: शब्दशः, भावार्थ and रूढ अर्थ. Marathi distinguishes शब्दशः भाषांतर from भावार्थाने उतरवणे, and a म्हण is carried over by what it does rather than by its words. रूढ अर्थ, the settled sense, is the first casualty of a literal translation.
| Word | Say it | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| भाषांतर | bhashantar | translation |
| भावार्थ | bhavarth | sense, meaning |
| म्हण | mhan | proverb, saying |
| रूढ अर्थ | rudh arth | settled meaning |
| आशय | aashay | import, purport |
शब्दशः is the adverb for word-for-word; भावार्थाने उतरवणे works by sense. म्हण is feminine (म्हण उतरवली), अर्थ is masculine singular (अर्थ बदलला), and the settled usage is रूढ अर्थ — the sense a reader supplies without being told.

Recall drills — 42 more questions from the C2 words
These 42 drills are generated from the Marathi C2 vocabulary list — the words of “Semantic precision and inference” through “Cultural pragmatics and expert mediation”, in both directions: recognition (word → meaning) and production (meaning → word). They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

Marathi C2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms
These sections are written for Marathi C2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.
Culture note
Marathi keeps two vocabularies on one shelf. The spoken layer — कर, दे, बघ, सांग — runs the street, the play and the friendly e-mail; a Sanskrit-derived layer — करणे, प्रदान करणे, अवलोकन, प्रस्ताव — runs the statute, the editorial and the examination answer. शुद्धलेखन, the standard orthography, decides where a word doubles its consonant or drops a vowel, and it is the layer a reader notices first: a misplaced letter in a formal word reads as a foreigner, while the same slip in a spoken word passes as dialect.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly
What it says: When we talk about big cities we forget one thing: a city does not grow by figures, it grows by people. The data show growth, but they do not show the sweat behind those figures. On paper everything looks smooth — roads, taps, electricity; in practice the queues are long. Writing this is not criticism of the city but showing its true picture. Where development is visible, something is often left behind. Only when that something is named does the discussion move forward.

What it says: Specialist: The language in this report now reads papery. Mediator: You mean the words are weighty, but the reader tires? Specialist: Exactly that. करणे and प्रदान करणे are not always needed; sometimes the plain कर is enough. Mediator: Then I will write two paragraphs in simple language and keep the rest formal. Specialist: That is better. If there is irony, keep it for the last sentence, not in the middle.

The 3 mistakes this level makes
- सर आला. → सर आले. Marathi marks respect with the plural: सर आले, ते बोलले, मॅडम म्हणाल्या.
- हे सर्व मुद्दे महत्त्वाचे आहे. → हे सर्व मुद्दे महत्त्वाचे आहेत. मुद्दे is plural, so it takes आहेत.
- सर म्हणाले की तो उद्या येईल. → सर म्हणाले की ते उद्या येतील. Respect carries into reported speech: ते येतील stays plural even when it is one person.
Your task
Move a paragraph into the formal register Take five plain Marathi sentences about your work and rewrite them in the written register: करणे forms instead of कर, सदर and प्रस्तुत where they fit, one शब्दशः quotation, one उपरोध at the end, and the honorific plural kept wherever a senior is mentioned.
