Telugu A1 — A1 Beginner Telugu

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Telugu A1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a child, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can greet, count to twenty, read a shop sign.
A child learning Telugu at level A1 (child)
A1 — on the ladder this level is a child, age 7: by the end of it the learner can greet, count to twenty, read a shop sign. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A1 is finished

  • Build level-appropriate comprehension and production.
  • Use Telugu script with romanisation and accurate English meaning.
  • Adapt language to age, relationship, context, and register.

At the pharmacy: a simple request

Ask for a familiar medicine and explain one basic symptom without turning the exchange into a diagnosis.

Telugu A1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Telugu A1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Telugu is written in its own left-to-right script. A consonant normally carries an inherent short a; a vowel sign changes that sound, and the virama (్) removes it or helps write a consonant cluster. A learner can therefore read a syllable by looking at the consonant and the mark attached to it, rather than treating every printed shape as an unrelated letter. Telugu and Kannada scripts also share a historical stage, though each is a distinct script and language.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

What it says: My name is Ananya. I live in Vijayawada. There are Telugu books in our home. Today I am reading vowels and consonants. Our teacher wrote one letter on the board. I pronounced it and wrote it again in my book. Now I can read short words slowly.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged te-IN; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

అనన్య: నమస్కారం, ఇది తెలుగు తరగతి ఎక్కడ?<br>ఉపాధ్యాయుడు: ఈ గది చివర ఉంది. నెమ్మదిగా రండి.<br>అనన్య: ధన్యవాదాలు. నేను కొత్త విద్యార్థిని.<br>ఉపాధ్యాయుడు: స్వాగతం. మీ పుస్తకం తెరవండి.

What it says: Ananya: Hello, where is the Telugu class? Teacher: It is at the end of this corridor. Please come slowly. Ananya: Thank you. I am a new student. Teacher: Welcome. Open your book.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • నా పేరు నాకు అనన్య. → నా పేరు అనన్య. A name is introduced directly; the dative నాకు does not belong in this pattern.
  • నేను పాఠశాల వెళ్తాను. → నేను పాఠశాలకు వెళ్తాను. A destination takes the dative suffix -కు: పాఠశాలకు.
  • మీరు రా. → మీరు రండి. Respectful మీరు takes the respectful imperative రండి, not the familiar రా.

Your task

తెలుగు అక్షరాలతో స్వపరిచయం Write six short Telugu sentences: your name, town, one person at home, a book you read, a letter you are practising, and a polite question to a classmate. Underline two vowel signs and one virama. Read the sentences slowly, then copy one of them without looking at the model.

After A1: the A1+ checkpoint

A1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Telugu A1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A1+ when you can ask for things, give a phone number, name the days. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the A2 pages.
