Urdu A1 — A1 Beginner Urdu

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Urdu A1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a child, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can greet, count to twenty, read a shop sign.
A child learning Urdu at level A1 (child)
A1 — on the ladder this level is a child, age 7: by the end of it the learner can greet, count to twenty, read a shop sign. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A1 is finished

  • Read and recognise the core Nastaliq letters from right to left.
  • Exchange greetings and handle essential daily interactions politely.
  • Build short present-tense sentences with clear romanisation support.

Greetings and Courtesy

Urdu A1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Urdu A1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Urdu is written from right to left in a connected Perso-Arabic script. Letter shapes can change with position, while short vowels are often not written in ordinary text. Learners benefit from reading complete, familiar words rather than treating each joined shape as a separate letter. Spoken forms and conventions vary across regions and communities.

Source (named, not linked): unicode.org.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

میرا نام سارہ ہے۔ میں اردو پڑھتی ہوں۔ استاد ایک لفظ تختے پر لکھتے ہیں۔ میں لفظ کو دائیں سے بائیں پڑھتی ہوں اور اپنی کاپی میں لکھتی ہوں۔ پھر میں استاد سے اس کا مطلب پوچھتی ہوں۔

What it says: My name is Sara. I study Urdu. The teacher writes a word on the board. I read it from right to left and write it in my notebook. Then I ask the teacher what it means.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged ur-PK; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

استاد: السلام علیکم، آپ کا نام کیا ہے؟<br>طالب علم: میرا نام سارہ ہے۔<br>استاد: کیا آپ یہ لفظ پڑھ سکتی ہیں؟<br>طالب علم: جی، مگر اس کا مطلب بتائیے۔

What it says: Teacher: Hello, what is your name? Student: My name is Sara. Teacher: Can you read this word? Student: Yes, but please tell me what it means.

10 idioms and fixed phrases

IdiomWord for wordWhat it means

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • آپ کہاں ہے؟ → آپ کہاں ہیں؟ Respectful آپ normally takes the honorific/plural verb ہیں.
  • میں ٹھیک ہے۔ → میں ٹھیک ہوں۔ The first-person copula is ہوں, not ہے.
  • مجھے اردو سیکھتا ہوں۔ → میں اردو سیکھتا/سیکھتی ہوں۔ The learner is the subject; match the verb to the speaker.

Your task

Urdu A1 reflection and production task Write a short response using two expressions from this level. State the audience, keep the address form consistent, and mark which claim is observed, reported or inferred. Read it aloud once and revise any phrase that overstates the evidence.

After A1: the A1+ checkpoint

A1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Urdu A1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A1+ when you can ask for things, give a phone number, name the days. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the A2 pages.
