Urdu A2 — A2 Elementary Urdu

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Urdu A2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a teenager, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can talk about your day, shop, order food.
A teenager learning Urdu at level A2 (teen)
A2 — on the ladder this level is a teenager, age 13: by the end of it the learner can talk about your day, shop, order food. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A2 is finished

 • Handle routine health, school, workplace, and home interactions.
 • Use polite commands, linked actions, and progressive descriptions.
 • Participate respectfully in everyday community conversations.

Urdu A2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Urdu A2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Urdu distinguishes familiar and respectful address. آپ is widely used for polite address and normally takes honorific agreement; تم is more familiar, but the choice depends on relationship, setting and local practice. A learner should not copy one address form into every conversation.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

کل عائشہ نے کلینک کو فون کیا۔ اس نے ڈاکٹر سے وقت مانگا اور اپنی علامات بتائیں۔ استقبالیہ نے جمعرات کا وقت دیا۔ عائشہ نے وقت لکھ لیا اور پوچھا کہ رپورٹ ساتھ لانی ہے یا نہیں۔

What it says: Yesterday Ayesha called the clinic. She asked the doctor for an appointment and described her symptoms. Reception gave her a Thursday appointment. Ayesha wrote down the time and asked whether she should bring the report.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged ur-PK; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

عائشہ: کیا جمعرات کو ڈاکٹر سے مل سکتی ہوں؟
استقبالیہ: جی، دس بجے ایک وقت خالی ہے۔
عائشہ: شکریہ، میں رپورٹ بھی لے آؤں گی۔
استقبالیہ: براہ کرم اپنا نام لکھوا دیجیے۔

What it says: Ayesha: Can I see the doctor on Thursday? Reception: Yes, there is an opening at ten. Ayesha: Thank you, I will bring the report too. Reception: Please give us your name.

10 idioms and fixed phrases

IdiomWord for wordWhat it means
جان میں جان آناlife returning to the bodyto feel relieved
بات بنناthe matter taking shapefor a plan to work out
دل لگاناto attach the heartto become engaged or interested
ہاتھ سے نکلناto leave the handto get out of control
آنکھ بچا کرwhile avoiding the eyewithout being noticed
سر درد بنناto become a headacheto become a troublesome problem
وقت نکالناto take time outto make time for something
خیال رکھناto keep a thoughtto take care
کام آناto come into useto be useful
آگاہ کرناto make awareto inform someone

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • میں ڈاکٹر کو وقت پوچھا۔ → میں نے ڈاکٹر سے وقت پوچھا۔ Use سے for asking a person; past transitive Urdu commonly marks the subject with نے.
 • وہ کل آتا ہے۔ → وہ کل آئے گا/گی۔ A future-time plan needs a future form, with agreement to the speaker described.
 • مجھے دوا پینا ہے۔ → مجھے دوا لینی ہے۔ Urdu uses the natural collocation دوا لینا for taking medicine.

Your task

Urdu A2 reflection and production task Write a short response using two expressions from this level. State the audience, keep the address form consistent, and mark which claim is observed, reported or inferred. Read it aloud once and revise any phrase that overstates the evidence.

After A2: the A2+ checkpoint

A2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Urdu A2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A2+ when you can keep a conversation going, tell a short story. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B1 pages.
