Malawi has a long-established Gujarati and Ismaili trading community, present in Blantyre and Lilongwe for well over a century and still central to commercial life. Hindi and Gujarati are living languages within it, which means a Malawian learner has genuine local practice partners rather than only online ones. Chichewa speakers get a small real bonus from its noun class system: a language that sorts nouns into classes and makes the rest of the sentence agree is good preparation for Hindi's gender agreement, which reaches into adjectives and verbs. English gives immediate access to romanised Hindi and the beginner path.

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta.
