Every Bengali journey starts with the same seven keys: নমস্কার (nomoshkar — hello), হ্যাঁ (hyã — yes), না (na — no), ধন্যবাদ (dhonnobad — thank you), দয়া করে (doya kore — please), ঠিক আছে (thik achhe — okay), and আমি (ami — I). Memorise nothing else in week one. These seven open doors, buy patience, and give every stranger a reason to help you with word number eight.
Your first sentence needs only three of them: আমি ঠিক আছি (ami thik achhi — I am fine). Say it out loud right now, three times, and you have crossed the hardest border in language learning — the one between studying Bengali and speaking it. Everything after this is just more words in the same brave mouth.
Forget the alphabet for the first week. Spoken Bengali first, script second — that order keeps learners going, while script-first learners usually quit somewhere around the eleventh vowel sign. When you are ready, the alphabet page teaches the letters through words you already speak, so nothing you learn now is ever wasted.
The ten-minute plan: minutes one to three, say yesterday's words aloud. Minutes four to seven, learn three new words and use each in one sentence about your own life — আমার চা ভালো লাগে (I like tea) beats any flashcard. Minutes eight to ten, listen to one dialogue and shadow it, mumbling along half a beat behind. Ten minutes, every day, out loud: that is the whole method.

- I / me
- I understand
Context check. For Bengali for absolute beginners, “I understand” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Questions learners ask
No. Start with spoken Bengali in Roman letters, and let the script come second. Learners who speak first and read later stay motivated far longer than learners who drill the alphabet for a month before saying a word.
Ten focused minutes beats an hour of passive app-tapping. Say every new word out loud three times, then use it in one real sentence about your own life. The mouth learns what the eyes only visit.
নমস্কার for respect, হ্যাঁ and না, ধন্যবাদ, দয়া করে, ঠিক আছে, and আমি — I. With those seven you can open any interaction in Bengal politely while your vocabulary grows underneath.
