Core Bengali vocabulary: the words that do the work

Family, colours and daily-life words — the small set that carries most of what you will ever say.

A hundred words carry most of daily life, and this page holds the first third of them. Start with people: বাবা (baba — father), মা (ma — mother), ভাই (bhai — brother), বোন (bon — sister), ছেলে (chhele — boy/son), মেয়ে (meye — girl/daughter). Then stretch দাদা and দিদি to every slightly-older stranger — family words are also respect words.

Colours come next because the market demands them: লাল (lal — red), নীল (neel — blue), সবুজ (shobuj — green), হলুদ (holud — yellow), সাদা (shada — white), কালো (kalo — black). Point and ask এটা কী রঙ? (eta ki rong — what colour is this?) and shopkeepers become teachers.

Then the adjectives that judge everything: ভালো (bhalo — good), খারাপ (kharap — bad), বড় (boro — big), ছোট (chhoto — small), নতুন (notun — new), পুরনো (purono — old). And the nouns of home: বাড়ি (bari — house), জল (jol — water), ভাত (bhat — rice), বই (boi — book). Twenty words, and you can already want things out loud.

Learn ten words a day, always out loud, always inside a sentence. বড় বাড়ি (big house) sticks in memory; বড় floating alone evaporates by evening. Attach each word to something you can see, touch or eat — vocabulary learned through the senses stays for years.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on Hindu and Muslim words. Bengali has gentle doublets from its two communities — জল/পানি (water), নিমন্ত্রণ/দাওয়াত (invitation). Neither is wrong and everyone understands both. Learn your surroundings' version first, recognise the other.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Core Bengali vocabulary. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Bengali form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  2. Good / bad
  3. Book

Context check. For Core Bengali vocabulary, “Book” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Questions learners ask

জল or পানি — which word for water?

Both mean water, split by community: Hindu families tend to say জল (jol), Muslim families পানি (pani). Everyone understands both. Use whichever you hear around you — matching your surroundings is the whole trick.

Why does everyone call strangers দাদা?

দাদা (dada — elder brother) and দিদি (didi — elder sister) stretch far beyond blood: use them for any slightly-older man or woman and doors open. It is respect disguised as family.

How many words should I learn daily?

Ten a day, out loud, in sentences — never bare lists. বড় বাড়ি (big house) sticks; বড় alone evaporates. Attach every new word to something you can see.
