Writing Bengali

Letters, matra lines, conjuncts, keyboards — Bengali from pen to diary to phone.

Writing starts at the matra line — the horizontal wire every letter hangs from. Vowels first: অ আ ই ঈ উ ঊ এ ঐ ও ঔ, each with its standalone shape and its sign-shape that clings to consonants. Write big, write slow, say each sound aloud: the hand learns what the mouth teaches it.

Consonants come in beautiful families: ক খ গ ঘ ঙ (throat), চ ছ জ ঝ ঞ (palate), ট ঠ ড ঢ ণ (roof), ত থ দ ধ ন (teeth), প ফ ব ভ ম (lips). Row by row, the mouth moves forward — chant each row and feel the sound travel. This ancient order is a pronunciation map disguised as an alphabet.

Then the stacks you write yourself: যুক্তাক্ষর like ক্ষ, জ্ঞ, স্ত. Write them as dances, not drawings — ক্ষ is ক dissolving into ষ — and practise inside real words (স্কুল, জ্ঞান, বন্ধু) rather than as isolated puzzles. Ugly stacks in real words beat pretty stacks in a chart.

Go digital with phonetic typing: type ami bhalo achhi and watch আমি ভালো আছি appear. Message friends, comment on songs, keep the diary on your phone — typed Bengali counts fully as writing, and the keyboard forgives wobbly matra lines while your handwriting catches up.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on ই, ঈ, উ, ঊ. Bengali has short and long pairs — ই/ঈ, উ/ঊ — that sound identical in modern speech but spell differently: ইদ (Eid) versus ঈগল (eagle). Natives learn them word by word over years, so forgive yourself every mix-up and keep a small list of the ones you actually use.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Writing Bengali. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Bengali form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

Questions learners ask

Must I learn to handwrite Bengali?

Yes — handwriting teaches letter shapes the way typing never will, and Bengalis warm visibly to foreigners who handwrite even badly. But learn phonetic typing alongside it; you will type a hundred messages for every handwritten note.

How do I type in Bengali?

Type Bengali sounds in Roman letters (ami, tumi, bhalo) and the keyboard converts them — Avro is the beloved classic, Google's Indic keyboard the easy start. Within days you will message in Bengali faster than you ever wrote it by hand.

What should I write about?

Three lines a night about your day: আজ ভালো দিন ছিল (today was a good day). Small, honest, daily — the diary finds your missing words for you and turns writing from homework into habit.
