Friendship first: বন্ধু (bondhu — friend), বন্ধুত্ব (bondhutto — friendship), প্রাণের বন্ধু (friend of my soul). Bengali friendships run deep and loud — চা খাবি? (having tea?) is a love language. Make one Bengali friend and the language stops being a subject; it becomes gossip, jokes and 2 a.m. phone calls.

Love has levels. ভালো লাগে (I like) for the everyday — তোমাকে ভালো লাগে (I like you). ভালোবাসি (I love) for the deep — তোমাকে ভালোবাসি, said rarely and meant wholly. প্রেম (prem — romance) for the poetry. Climb the ladder in order; Bengali hearts notice skipped rungs.

Marriage talk: বিয়ে (biye — wedding/marriage), বর (bor — groom), কনে (kone — bride), বিবাহিত (bibahito — married). বিয়ে কবে? (when's the wedding?) is every auntie's favourite question — learn to dodge it gracefully. Weddings are language baths: go, dance badly, speak worse, eat best.

Missing and togetherness close the heart: তোমার কথা মনে পড়ে (I miss you, poetically), একসাথে (together), সবসময় (always), সুখী (happy). সবসময় একসাথে সুখী (always happy together) — say it at weddings and watch the elders cry. Relationships are why languages exist; Bengali just says them prettier.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on প্রেমিক and প্রেমিকা. প্রেমিক (premik — boyfriend) and প্রেমিকা (premika — girlfriend) are literary and slightly formal; young Bengalis often just say boyfriend/girlfriend in English. Know the Bengali words, use them in writing and elders' company, and mirror your friends everywhere else.

Questions learners ask

ভালোবাসি or ভালো লাগে?

ভালোবাসি (bhalobashi — I love) is the deep word, for people that matter most. ভালো লাগে (bhalo lage — I like) is the everyday word, for foods, films and friends. Say ভালোবাসি rarely and mean it; say ভালো লাগে daily and smile.

How do I say I miss you?

তোমার কথা মনে পড়ে (I remember you / I miss you) — softer and more Bengali than a direct translation of miss. For deeper missing: তোমাকে ছাড়া ভালো লাগে না (I don't feel good without you). Bengalis miss sideways, poetically.

What do I call my best friend?

প্রাণের বন্ধু (praner bondhu — friend of my soul) is the highest friendship title in the language. Bestow it rarely, earn it slowly, and never translate it back — some phrases only live in Bengali.
