Write your name in Bengali

Sound by sound, letter by letter — your name in Bengali script, plus the two-name tradition.

🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Learn Bengali spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.

Start with sounds, not spelling. Say your name slowly and catch each sound: R-A-H-U-L becomes রা-হু-ল — রাহুল. M-A-R-I-A becomes মা-রি-য়া — মারিয়া. English spelling lies (looking at you, silent letters); your ear tells the truth. Sounds first, letters second, always.

Some sounds need Bengali substitutes. V has no Bengali letter, so ভ steps in: ভিক্টর (Victor). Z becomes জ: জারা (Zara). F becomes ফ: ফারিয়া (Faria). W becomes ওয়: ওয়াসিম (Wasim). TH softens to থ or দ. These swaps are standard, not wrong — every Bengali reader pronounces them back correctly.

Join the letters with vowel signs, not standalone vowels. রা is র plus the া sign — one flowing shape, not two letters side by side. রি, রী, রু, রূ hang their signs above, below and around the consonant. Write your name ten times slowly and the joins become muscle memory.

Then learn the two-name tradition. ভালো নাম (bhalo nam) is the formal name on certificates — রবীন্দ্রনাথ. ডাকনাম (daknam) is the called name friends actually use — রবি. When Bengalis share their daknam with you, you have been adopted: use it, treasure it, and offer your own nickname back.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on র, ড় and ঢ়. Bengali hears three r-like sounds where English hears one: র (ro, tapped), ড় (rro, flapped — the dot changes everything), ঢ় (rrho, breathy). Foreign names usually take plain র — রাহুল, রিয়া, রবার্ট. The dotted two arrive with real Bengali words; let them wait.

Questions learners ask

How do I convert my name to Bengali?

Map sounds, not letters: find the Bengali letter for each sound you hear. V becomes ভ, Z becomes জ, F becomes ফ, W becomes ওয়. Say your name slowly, catch each sound, stack the letters — then ask a Bengali friend to bless it.

What are ভালো নাম and ডাকনাম?

Most Bengalis carry two: ভালো নাম (bhalo nam — the formal good name, on certificates) and ডাকনাম (daknam — the called name, used by everyone who loves them). Ask for both — the daknam is the friendship prize.

How do I ask someone to spell their name?

বানান করুন (banan korun — please spell it). Then write it down immediately and read it back: নামটা দেখি? (let me see the name?). Bengalis spell patiently for learners who write carefully.
