Flashcards by topic in Bengali

Topic decks, both-directions testing, the ten-minute routine — memory that sticks.

🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Learn Bengali spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.

Build decks by topic, not by alphabet: food cards (মাছ, ভাত, ঝাল), family cards (মা, দাদা, কাকা), verb cards (যাই, খাই, করি). Topics bundle words the way life serves them — the market tests your food deck, dinner tests it again. Twenty cards per topic, no more; small decks get finished.

Make every card three-layered: Bengali word on the front; picture plus one example sentence on the back. নতুন শব্দ (new word) meets পুরনো শব্দ (old words) in every sentence — মাছ খাই reuses খাই while teaching মাছ. Cards that connect to known words stick; isolated cards slide off.

Test both directions and trust only recall. Bengali→English asks do you recognise; English→Bengali asks can you produce — ভুলে গেছি (I've forgotten) is data, not failure. Failed cards return tomorrow, then in three days, then weekly: spacing does the memorising while you sleep.

Keep the routine sacred: সকালে দশ মিনিট — ten morning minutes, new cards first, reviews after, phone still asleep. নিজেকে পরীক্ষা করুন (test yourself) before checking answers; মনে রাখুন (remember) what you missed. A year of mornings is 3,650 minutes — enough to carry five thousand words for life.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on মুখস্থ. মুখস্থ (mukhostho — by heart) is the traditional Bengali way: recite until the words live in your mouth. It works beautifully for rhymes, songs and core phrases — and terribly for grammar rules. Memorise sounds with মুখস্থ; understand patterns with thinking. Both, each in its place.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Flashcards by topic. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Bengali form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. Flashcard
  2. In the morning
  3. Successful

Context check. For Flashcards by topic, “Successful” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Questions learners ask

What goes on a good card?

The word on the front, a PICTURE plus one example sentence on the back — never bare translation alone. মাছ → fish photo + মাছ খাই (I eat fish). Pictures dodge translation; sentences teach usage; the combo sticks twice.

Which direction should I test?

Both directions, always: Bengali→English (recognition) and English→Bengali (recall). Recognition feels easy and lies; recall feels hard and teaches. Test recall twice as often as recognition.

When should I review?

Ten minutes every morning, same time, before the phone wakes up: new cards first, reviews after, mistakes re-tested tomorrow. সকালে দশ মিনিট (ten minutes in the morning) outperforms an hour of midnight cramming.
