Bengali pronunciation: sound Bengali, not textbook
Six sounds that matter, two traps to dodge — the fastest pronunciation upgrade in the language.

Six sounds carry Bengali pronunciation, and the first is the famous one: অ is aw, as in English law. ক is kaw, গান is gaan… wait, no — গান keeps its া (aa), which is exactly the point: only the built-in অ says aw. And at word ends it rounds further to o: কথা (kotha), ভালো (bhalo).
Second: the three sh-letters. শ, ষ and স all sound like English sh in modern Kolkata speech — শহর (shohor), কষ্ট (koshto), সকাল (shokal). Purists keep subtle distinctions; learners should say sh everywhere and be understood everywhere. One less thing to fear.
Third and fourth: the r-family. র is a light tap or trill (রাত — rat, night). ড় is the flap — tongue flicks like the tt in American butter (বড় — boro, big). Mix them and words change meaning, so drill minimal pairs: করা/কড়া, পড়া/পরা. Fifth: য় is just y (মেয়ে — meye). Sixth: ছ is breathy chh — push air through ছেলে (chhele, boy).
Two traps to dodge. Trap one: stress sits early and light — Bengali does not punch syllables like English. Trap two: the ো vs অ ending (bhalo not bhalaw). Record yourself reading this page's table, compare with the speaker buttons at 0.2×, and fix one sound a week. In six weeks you will sound like someone's neighbour.

Questions learners ask
Like aw in English law: ক is kaw, কথা is kotha. At the end of words অ often rounds fully to o. This one sound is the audible line between Hindi speakers trying Bengali and real Bengali speakers.
To a learner's ear, yes — all three (শ ষ স) sound like English sh in most Kolkata speech. Say sh for all of them and refine later; nobody will misunderstand you.
র is a light trill/tap, ড় is the English-like flap (like the tt in American butter). Wrong one, wrong word: করা (kora — to do) versus কড়া (kora — strict). Minimal pairs are the gym for this distinction.
