Spanish A1 — Beginner: first words, family, food

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Spanish A1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 65 words, 293 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a child, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can greet, count to twenty, read a shop sign.
A child learning Spanish at level A1 (child)
A1 — on the ladder this level is a child, age 7: by the end of it the learner can greet, count to twenty, read a shop sign. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A1 is finished

 • Greet people and introduce yourself
 • Count, tell age, talk about family
 • Order food and use basic present-tense verbs

Hello! Greetings and politeness

Start with the magic words. Say HOLA to anyone, anytime. Spanish greets the day in parts: morning (buenos días), afternoon/evening (buenas tardes), night (buenas noches). POR FAVOR (please) and GRACIAS (thanks) open every door.

Every noun is EL or LA

Spanish nouns are masculine (EL) or feminine (LA). Words ending in -o are usually EL; words ending in -a are usually LA. Learn each noun WITH its el/la — never alone.

el + masculine noun · la + feminine noun
WordSay itMeaning
el libroehl LEE-brohthe book
la casalah KAH-sahthe house
el aguaehl AH-gwahthe water (looks odd, still feminine!)
Watch out:

Food and -AR verbs

Food first! AGUA, PAN, LECHE, MANZANA. To order, use QUIERO (I want) or QUISIERA (I would like, politer). Most Spanish verbs end in -AR: HABLAR (to speak) → HABLO (I speak), HABLAS (you speak), HABLA (he/she speaks).

WordSay itMeaning
el aguaehl AH-gwahwater
el panehl pahnbread
la lechelah LEH-chehmilk
la manzanalah mahn-SAH-nahapple
el arrozehl ah-RROHSrice
el polloehl POH-yohchicken
el caféehl kah-FEHcoffee
el téehl tehtea
Present -AR verbs: hablo, hablas, habla

Take off -AR, add -O (I), -AS (you), -A (he/she). HABLAR → hablo, hablas, habla. This one pattern speaks hundreds of verbs: COMO (I eat), BEBO? No — BEBER is -ER. For now: -AR only!

Weather with hacer

Hoy hace frío y llueve. En verano hace mucho calor, en invierno nieva en la sierra. «hace» is the third person of hacer and never takes a subject pronoun.

hace + frío/calor/sol/viento · llueve / nieva · en + season

Watch out:
 • Es frío hoy. → Hace frío hoy. Temperature states take hacer, not ser.
 • Yo tengo frío. (about the weather) → Hace frío. Tengo frío (about me). Weather is hace frío; a person's sensation is tengo frío.

Spanish A1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Spanish A1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Spanish carries two second persons and a whole social grammar with them: tú for friends, family, students and anyone who has offered it; usted for strangers, officials, older people and most first meetings. Unlike German, the verb form makes the choice audible in every sentence (hablas / habla), so a learner who guesses is heard immediately — which is why A1 drills both from the first lesson.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

Ana llega nueva a la clase. Dice: «Hola, me llamo Ana. ¿Y tú?» Ben contesta: «Yo soy Ben. ¿De dónde eres?» — «De Sevilla. ¿Y tú?» — «De México.» Entra el profesor y dice: «Buenos días. Yo soy el señor García.» Todos dicen: «Buenos días, señor García.»

What it says: Ana arrives new to the class. She says: 'Hello, my name is Ana. And you?' Ben answers: 'I am Ben. Where are you from?' — 'From Seville. And you?' — 'From Mexico.' The teacher comes in and says: 'Good morning. I am Mr García.' Everyone says: 'Good morning, Mr García.'

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged es-ES; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Ana: ¡Hola! Me llamo Ana. ¿Y tú?
Ben: Yo soy Ben. ¿Cómo estás?
Ana: Bien, gracias. ¿Y tú?
Ben: Bien también. ¿De dónde eres?

What it says: Ana: Hello! My name is Ana. And you? Ben: I am Ben. How are you? Ana: Fine, thanks. And you? Ben: Fine too. Where are you from?

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • Yo soy bien. → Yo estoy bien. Feelings and states take estar; ser would describe a permanent quality.
 • Me llamo es Ana. → Me llamo Ana. / Soy Ana. llamarse already carries the verb; two verbs in one sentence.
 • ¿Cómo estás? (to a professor you have just met) → ¿Cómo está usted? First meetings take usted; tú is offered, not assumed.

Your task

Introduce yourself twice Write the same introduction twice in Spanish: once to a classmate (tú) and once to a professor's secretary at a first meeting (usted, surname). Read both aloud. Then change one word and check that the whole sentence still agrees — the verb ending, the possessive and the greeting all follow the person you chose, and a mixed pair is what a listener hears first.

After A1: the A1+ checkpoint

A1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Spanish A1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A1+ when you can ask for things, give a phone number, name the days. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the A2 pages.
