Spanish B1 — Intermediate: stories, opinions, work, plans

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Spanish B1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a young adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast.
A young adult learning Spanish at level B1 (youth)
B1 — on the ladder this level is a young adult, age 20: by the end of it the learner can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B1 is finished

 • Tell stories in past tenses
 • Compare things and give opinions
 • Handle work talk and polite requests

Contar una anécdota: primero, luego, de repente

Spanish anecdotes mix the pretérito for events and the imperfecto for the scene: PRIMERO LLEGAMOS, LUEGO EMPEZÓ A LLOVER, DE REPENTE SE FUE LA LUZ. The imperfect describes; the preterite acts.

Estábamos en casa, llovía y de repente se fue la luz. The scene is imperfect, the turn is preterite — that pairing is what makes a Spanish story sound native.

Spanish B1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Spanish B1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

The Spanish working day still bends around the middle of the day: a long lunch, often at home, and business that runs into the evening. The siesta is not laziness but the shape of a climate and a timetable; in the cities it has shrunk to a short pause, while the evening meeting and the late dinner remain. B1 needs the vocabulary because work is the first place a learner is asked about plans in a register that is neither home nor classroom.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Siesta”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

Ana trabaja en una oficina en Sevilla. «Entro a las ocho y salgo a las tres», dice. «Luego como en casa y duermo veinte minutos.» Por la tarde vuelve al trabajo si hay una reunión con clientes de América: «A las siete hablamos con México, así que la tarde es larga.» Después cursa una formación: «Quiero cambiar de departamento el año que viene.»

What it says: Ana works in an office in Seville. 'I start at eight and leave at three,' she says. 'Then I eat at home and sleep twenty minutes.' In the afternoon she goes back to work if there is a meeting with clients from America: 'At seven we talk to Mexico, so the afternoon is long.' Afterwards she takes a training course: 'I want to change department next year.'

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged es-ES; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Jefe: ¿Qué tal va el proyecto?
Ben: Bien, pero necesito dos días más.
Jefe: ¿Y eso?
Ben: Los datos del cliente llegan tarde. Se lo digo ahora para que no haya sorpresas.

What it says: Boss: How is the project going? Ben: Well, but I need two more days. Boss: Why? Ben: The client's data arrives late. I'm telling you now so there are no surprises.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • Tengo 25 años y trabajo aquí desde tres años. → Tengo 25 años y trabajo aquí desde hace tres años. Duration takes desde hace; desde alone marks a point in time.
 • Estoy de acuerdo contigo, pero pienso que no es posible el plan. → … pero creo que el plan no es posible. Spanish prefers the negative before the verb and the subject after it.
 • Mañana yo iré a trabajar y después yo comeré. → Mañana iré a trabajar y después comeré. Pronouns are dropped when the verb ending already carries the person.

Your task

Describe your working life in ninety seconds Record ninety seconds in Spanish about what you do and what comes next: current job or study, one thing that was hard at the start, one plan for next year. Use one «desde hace», one «para que + subjunctive» and one reflexive verb. Listen back and count the sentences where the verb ending and the subject disagree — those are the ones to rewrite.

After B1: the B1+ checkpoint

B1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Spanish B1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B1+ when you can work in the language, argue a point politely. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B2 pages.
