Spanish B2 — Upper intermediate: debate, work, culture

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Spanish B2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is an adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke.
An adult learning Spanish at level B2 (adult)

Spanish B2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Spanish B2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Spanish argument lives in the tertulia — the regular gathering where talk is the point, and disagreement is expected to be lively and personal without being rude. In writing the tone drops: an opinion piece can concede in the first paragraph («es cierto que…») and then rebut at length, because the concession is read as seriousness rather than weakness. B2 teaches that register: concede, qualify, rebut, propose.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Tertulia”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

«Es cierto que la medida es popular», escribe la columnista, «pero también es cierta una cosa: nadie ha medido su coste.» En la tertulia de la radio la discusión sigue el mismo patrón: primero se concede, después se matiza y solo al final se propone. Alguien dice: «A mí me da la impresión de que el problema no es la norma, sino cómo se aplica.» Y todos están de acuerdo.

What it says: 'It is true that the measure is popular,' writes the columnist, 'but one thing is also true: nobody has measured its cost.' On the radio tertulia the discussion follows the same pattern: first concede, then qualify, and only at the end propose. Someone says: 'It seems to me that the problem is not the rule but how it is applied.' And everyone agrees.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged es-ES; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Moderador: ¿Le parece bien la medida?
Ana: En principio sí, aunque tengo dudas.
Moderador: ¿Cuáles?
Ana: No está claro cómo se va a financiar. Por eso propongo medirlo antes.

What it says: Moderator: Do you think the measure is a good idea? Ana: In principle yes, although I have doubts. Moderator: Which ones? Ana: It is not clear how it will be financed. That is why I propose measuring it first.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • Creo que es bueno, aunque que tiene problemas. → Creo que es bueno, aunque tiene problemas. aunque takes the indicative when the fact is real, the subjunctive when it is not.
 • Estoy de acuerdo con que el plan es malo. → No estoy de acuerdo con que el plan sea malo. Negated opinion takes the subjunctive: sea.
 • Aunque es tarde, vamos. / prob. → Aunque sea tarde, vamos. For a concession about a hypothetical condition the subjunctive is the natural form.

Your task

Argue one point through four moves Pick a rule in your workplace or study programme and write four Spanish paragraphs: the point, the concession («es cierto que…»), the objection with a qualifier («aunque», «sin embargo»), and the test or compromise you propose. Then say it aloud in two minutes without notes. Every sentence that starts with a concession should have its verb in the right mood — indicative for a fact, subjunctive for a hypothesis.

After B2: the B2+ checkpoint

B2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Spanish B2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B2+ when you can run a meeting, read a contract, disagree well.
