Spanish A2 — Elementary: city, travel, routines, health

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole Spanish A2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a teenager, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can talk about your day, shop, order food.
A teenager learning Spanish at level A2 (teen)
A2 — on the ladder this level is a teenager, age 13: by the end of it the learner can talk about your day, shop, order food. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A2 is finished

 • Find your way around a city
 • Talk about past trips
 • Describe routines and make future plans

Spanish A2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for Spanish A2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Spanish eating has a rhythm of its own: the mid-morning almuerzo, the late comida around two, and the sobremesa — the time after eating when nobody moves and the talk continues. Tapas are not a starter but a way of eating: small plates shared, ordered in rounds. A2 covers ordering because the phrases are short and real, and the cultural note is that «quedarse de sobremesa» is a compliment to the table, never a delay.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “Spanish cuisine”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

A las dos comemos. En la mesa hay pan, tortilla y ensalada. Mi madre pregunta: «¿Quieres más?» Yo digo: «No, gracias, estoy lleno.» Luego nos quedamos de sobremesa: café, charla y ninguna prisa. Por la noche vamos de tapas: dos raciones, una caña y la cuenta, que son nueve euros.

What it says: At two o'clock we eat. On the table there is bread, tortilla and salad. My mother asks: 'Do you want more?' I say: 'No thanks, I'm full.' Then we stay over the sobremesa: coffee, talk and no hurry. At night we go for tapas: two portions, a small beer and the bill, which is nine euros.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged es-ES; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Ben: ¿Qué quieres tomar?
Ana: Una caña, por favor.
Ben: ¿Y para comer?
Ana: Una ración de tortilla. Y la cuenta, cuando puedas.

What it says: Ben: What would you like to drink? Ana: A small beer, please. Ben: And to eat? Ana: A portion of tortilla. And the bill, when you can.

10 idioms and fixed phrases

IdiomWord for wordWhat it means

Está para chuparse los dedosit is to lick one's fingersit's delicious
Ponerse las botasto put on the bootsto eat one's fill
Tomar algoto take somethingto have a drink

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • Quiero un café, por favor. (to a waiter, first contact) → Quisiera un café, por favor. Quisiera is the polite request; quiero sounds blunt to a stranger.
 • Soy hambre. → Tengo hambre. Hunger is had: tener, not ser.
 • La cuenta, cuando puedes. (to a waiter) → La cuenta, cuando pueda. The polite frame takes usted: cuando pueda.

Your task

Order at a bar Write an eight-line bar dialogue in Spanish: greet, order a drink, order food, ask for the bill, pay, say goodbye. Use «quisiera» once, «por favor» twice, and no English. Then change the order to two people — «¿algo para picar?» — which forces the plural forms and is where learners slip from tú to vosotros (or ustedes, on the American side).

After A2: the A2+ checkpoint

A2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between Spanish A2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at A2+ when you can keep a conversation going, tell a short story. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B1 pages.
