French A2 — Elementary: city, travel, routines, health

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole French A2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. A2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the A2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a teenager, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can talk about your day, shop, order food.
A teenager learning French at level A2 (teen)
A2 — on the ladder this level is a teenager, age 13: by the end of it the learner can talk about your day, shop, order food. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when A2 is finished

 • Find your way around a French city
 • Talk about past trips with passé composé
 • Describe routines, health, and future plans

These 126 drills are generated from the French A2 vocabulary list — the words of “Getting around” through “Shopping and weather”, in both directions: recognition (word → meaning) and production (meaning → word). They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

French A2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for French A2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

The French meal is a timetable: déjeuner sits at noon, dîner arrives at eight or later, and the café between them is a place to stand, not to linger over dessert. « Je prends un café » orders; « je voudrais » softens; « l'addition, s'il vous plaît » ends the meal and, in a Parisian café, also ends your right to the table.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “French cuisine”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

Au restaurant, le serveur apporte la carte. Léa prend une entrée et un plat, Théo un plat et un dessert. « Et comme boisson ? — Une carafe d'eau, s'il vous plaît. » Le pain est gratuit, la carafe aussi. À la fin, Théo demande l'addition, partage et laisse un petit pourboire, car le service est déjà compris.

What it says: At the restaurant, the waiter brings the menu. Léa takes a starter and a main, Théo a main and a dessert. 'And to drink? — A jug of water, please.' The bread is free, and so is the jug. At the end Théo asks for the bill, splits it and leaves a small tip, since service is already included.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged fr-FR; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Théo: Qu'est-ce que tu prends ?
Léa: Je voudrais le menu du jour.
Théo: Et comme boisson ?
Léa: Une carafe d'eau. Et l'addition est comprise ?

What it says: Théo: What are you having? Léa: I would like the menu of the day. Théo: And to drink? Léa: A jug of water. And is the bill included?

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • Je veux un café. → Je voudrais un café. Je veux is blunt; je voudrais is the standard polite order.
 • Je vais prendre le addition. → Je vais payer l'addition. / L'addition, s'il vous plaît. In an order, prendre takes the dish; the bill is asked for.
 • Le menu est chez moi. → Le menu, s'il vous plaît. (the set menu) menu in French is the fixed-price meal, not the list of dishes.

Your task

Order a two-course meal out loud Write a nine-line restaurant scene: greet, ask for la carte, order a starter and a main with je voudrais, order drinks, ask what comes with the dish, ask for the bill, ask whether service is included, and leave. Then rewrite the same scene as you would say it to a friend at home (tu, je prends) and compare the two registers.
