French B2 — Upper intermediate: debate, work, culture

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole French B2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is an adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke.
An adult learning French at level B2 (adult)
B2 — on the ladder this level is an adult, age 34: by the end of it the learner can read a newspaper, write a real letter, joke. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B2 is finished

  • Argue opinions with the subjunctive mood
  • Write formal emails and master Y/EN pronouns
  • Understand idioms and build rich hypothetical stories

Opinion and debate

Wishes need subjunctive (je veux que…)

After wishes, French switches mood: JE VEUX QUE TU VIENNES (I want you to come). For -ER verbs the subjunctive looks the same (que tu PARLES) — the magic shows in rebels: que tu SOIS (be), que tu FASSES (do), que tu AILLES (go).

French B2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for French B2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

French argument has a taste for the counter-example: a claim is offered with « il est vrai que », then turned with « cela dit » or « en revanche ». The politeness of disagreeing lies in conceding the true part first, which is why a French debate can sound heated and still end in a handshake over a coffee.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “French culture”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

« Il est vrai que la mesure a réduit les coûts », dit la syndicaliste. « Cela dit, elle a augmenté la charge de travail, et personne n'a mesuré cet effet. » Le directeur répond que les chiffres sont provisoires. En revanche, il accepte une évaluation indépendante à la rentrée : deux positions, un accord partiel, et une date pour vérifier.

What it says: 'It is true that the measure reduced costs,' says the union representative. 'That said, it increased the workload, and nobody has measured that effect.' The director replies that the figures are provisional. However, he accepts an independent evaluation in September: two positions, a partial agreement, and a date to check it.

What it says: Théo: It is true that it costs a lot. Léa: That said, we cannot wait another year. Théo: Agreed in principle. However, we need a timetable. Léa: One checkpoint a month, does that suit you?

The 3 mistakes this level makes

  • Cela dit, mais en revanche, il faut un calendrier. → Cela dit, il faut un calendrier. One contrast marker per sentence.
  • Je suis pas d'accord du tout mais je respecte. → Je ne suis pas d'accord, même si je respecte votre position. State the limit of the disagreement; empty courtesy sounds dismissive.
  • Il est vrai que c'est cher, donc on laisse tomber. → Il est vrai que c'est cher ; en revanche, le risque est plus grand si on attend. Concede to keep the argument, not to abandon it.

Your task

Disagree in writing, twice Write a six-line French note about a decision you find partly wrong: concede with il est vrai que … , turn with cela dit / en revanche, offer a counter-measure, and close with one point of agreement and a date. Then rewrite the same note with every concession removed and compare which version a real reader would act on.

After B2: the B2+ checkpoint

B2+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between French B2 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B2+ when you can run a meeting, read a contract, disagree well. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the C1 pages.
