French B1 — Intermediate: stories, opinions, work, plans

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole French B1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. B1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the B1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is a young adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast.
A young adult learning French at level B1 (youth)
B1 — on the ladder this level is a young adult, age 20: by the end of it the learner can explain a problem, write a message, follow a podcast. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when B1 is finished

 • Tell stories with passé composé and imparfait
 • Compare things and argue opinions politely
 • Handle work talk and make future plans

Stories and opinions

Stories: passé composé vs imparfait

Two pasts! PASSÉ COMPOSÉ = finished actions (JE SUIS ARRIVÉ = I arrived). IMPARFAIT = ongoing scenes (IL FAISAIT BEAU = it was sunny). Set the scene with imparfait, fire events with passé composé.

Passé composé vs imparfait: parlé vs parlais

J'AI PARLÉ = I spoke (done). JE PARLAIS = I was speaking/used to speak (ongoing). Imparfait: parlAIS, parlAIS, parlAIT — same sound! Weather, feelings, habits → imparfait. Single events → passé composé.

French B1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for French B1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

The French working day is legally 35 hours, and the calendar compensates: RTT days, a long lunch, and August, when half of Paris changes address. The vocabulary of the office is therefore as much about time as about tasks — la pause déjeuner, les horaires, les congés — and asking a colleague for a favour starts with a look at the clock, not with the request.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “35-hour workweek”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

Au bureau, la journée commence par un café et la question des horaires. Léa travaille de neuf heures à dix-sept heures, avec une vraie pause déjeuner. Elle a des RTT et prend trois semaines de congés en août. Théo, lui, est en télétravail le vendredi : il finit plus tôt et répond aux courriels le soir, ce qui ne plaît pas à tout le monde.

What it says: At the office the day starts with a coffee and the question of hours. Léa works from nine to five, with a real lunch break. She has RTT days and takes three weeks of leave in August. Théo works from home on Fridays: he finishes earlier and answers emails in the evening, which does not please everyone.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged fr-FR; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Léa: Tu peux m'aider sur le dossier ?
Théo: Oui, mais pas avant deux heures.
Léa: Après la pause déjeuner, alors.
Théo: Parfait. Je t'envoie ma réponse cet après-midi.

What it says: Léa: Can you help me with the file? Théo: Yes, but not before two. Léa: After the lunch break, then. Théo: Perfect. I'll send you my answer this afternoon.

10 idioms and fixed phrases

IdiomWord for wordWhat it means
La pause déjeunerthe lunch breakthe lunch break
Les horairesthe hoursthe working hours
Prendre des congésto take leavesto take holiday
Être en télétravailto be in remote workto work from home
Un dossiera filea case, a project file
Ça marcheit walksthat works, OK
Je m'en occupeI occupy myself with itI'll take care of it
Coup de maina hand blowa helping hand
À la bourreat the slackrunning late (familiar)
Mettre les bouchées doublesto put double mouthfulsto put in double effort

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • Je travaille ici depuis trois ans (for a job you still hold) — acceptable, but the spoken norm is « ça fait trois ans que je travaille ici ». → Ça fait trois ans que je travaille ici. Spoken French prefers the ça fait … que frame for duration up to now.
 • Je prends mes congés en août depuis dix ans. → Ça fait dix ans que je prends mes congés en août. Duration up to now: ça fait + time + que.
 • Je suis d'accord avec toi, mais je suis pas d'accord sur le budget (double 'je suis'). → Je suis d'accord avec toi, mais pas sur le budget. Do not repeat the verb when the subject has not changed.

Your task

Plan a week of work in French Write seven French lines that plan your week the way a colleague would hear it: the hours you work, one RTT or holiday day, a remote day, one request for a hand with a file and its reply, and one thing you will take care of yourself. Then say the same plan to a friend in tu form and note which words change.

After B1: the B1+ checkpoint

B1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between French B1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at B1+ when you can work in the language, argue a point politely. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the B2 pages.
