French C1 — French C1 Advanced Mastery

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole French C1 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. C1 is one of the six CEFR levels and the C1 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is an older adult, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can idiom, register, tone — and hear when it is wrong.
An older adult learning French at level C1 (senior)
C1 — on the ladder this level is an older adult, age 58: by the end of it the learner can idiom, register, tone — and hear when it is wrong. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when C1 is finished

 • Control advanced discourse and register.
 • Synthesize and mediate complex information.
 • Produce precise professional and academic language.

These 126 drills are generated from the French C1 vocabulary list — the words of “Discourse and Stance” through “Pragmatics and Synthesis”, in both directions: recognition (word → meaning) and production (meaning → word). They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

French C1 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for French C1 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

Administrative French loves the noun: « la mise en œuvre de la réforme » hides an actor, a verb and a responsibility. C1 work is learning to un-nominalise — to read « procéder à l'actualisation » and hear « mettre à jour » — and to write in a register that stays impersonal without disappearing entirely.

Source (named, not linked): en.wikipedia.org, the article “French grammar”.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

Le rapport indique que « la mise en œuvre du dispositif fera l'objet d'une évaluation ». Traduit en français courant : quelqu'un devra vérifier si la mesure fonctionne, et le rapport ne dit pas qui. C'est précisément ce flou que la note de synthèse attaque : pour chaque phrase au passif, on écrit le verbe, le sujet et la date.

What it says: The report states that 'the implementation of the scheme will be the subject of an evaluation'. Translated into ordinary French: somebody will have to check whether the measure works, and the report does not say who. It is exactly that vagueness that the summary note attacks: for every passive sentence, write the verb, the subject and the date.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged fr-FR; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Analyste: Il conviendrait de procéder à un réexamen.
Président: Concrètement ?
Analyste: Concrètement : deux personnes, quinze jours, une note de trois pages.
Président: Voilà qui est plus clair.

What it says: Analyst: It would be advisable to carry out a review. Chair: Concretely? Analyst: Concretely: two people, two weeks, a three-page note. Chair: That is clearer.

10 idioms and fixed phrases

IdiomWord for wordWhat it means
La mise en œuvrethe putting into workimplementation
Faire l'objet deto be the object ofto be subject to
Procéder àto proceed toto carry out
Il conviendrait deit would be fitting toit would be advisable to

Sous réserve deunder reserve ofsubject to
Le cas échéantthe case arisingif applicable
À toutes fins utilesto all useful endsfor whatever purpose it may serve
Dont acteof which recordnoted accordingly

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • Il a été procédé par les services à une vérification (subject hidden). → Les services ont vérifié les comptes. Un-nominalise: name the actor and the verb.
 • Il conviendrait de procéder à un réexamen rapide et efficace et utile. → Il conviendrait de réexaminer le dispositif sous quinze jours. One adjective per claim; the date does the work.
 • Faire l'objet d'une évaluation par qui que ce soit. → Faire l'objet d'une évaluation indépendante. Replace the vague agent with a named one.

Your task

Un-nominalise one administrative paragraph Take a real French administrative sentence you have received — a letter, a notice, a school form — and rewrite it three times: as it was written, in plain French with a subject and a verb, and as a three-line memo that names who does what by when. Note every noun phrase you had to unpack; that list is your C1 vocabulary.

After C1: the C1+ checkpoint

C1+ is not a certificate — it is the half-step between French C1 and the next level, and it is on this site’s ladder because language schools use it. You are at C1+ when you can write for work, translate, teach a beginner. Get there by working the recall drills above and the review deck until nothing on this page surprises you, then open the C2 pages.
