French C2 — French C2 Advanced Mastery

Draft: not yet reviewed by a native speaker. Existing availability and indexing are preserved by owner instruction; that is not an editorial approval. Suggest a correction.

The whole French C2 level as one readable page: 3 units, 9 lessons, 63 words, 289 questions with every answer shown, a worksheet and a 10-item level test. Nothing here is behind JavaScript, and nothing needs an account.

Who this level is for. C2 is one of the six CEFR levels and the C2 rung on this site’s ladder: the learner in the picture is an elder, because on this site age is the rung — the same learner grows up the ladder as the language grows. By the end of it you can poetry, law, humour, and the mistake that sounds foreign.
An elder learning French at level C2 (elder)
C2 — on the ladder this level is an elder, age 78: by the end of it the learner can poetry, law, humour, and the mistake that sounds foreign. The same figure is on the course hub and in how the eleven rungs work.

What you can do when C2 is finished

 • Control advanced discourse and register.
 • Synthesize and mediate complex information.
 • Produce precise professional and academic language.

Le discours indirect libre : deux voix dans une phrase

Free indirect discourse fuses narrator and character: « Il hésitait. Partir ? Rester ? La ville était trop chère, et puis il y avait le travail. » No quotation marks, no reporting verb — the questions and the collocations carry the character's voice.

Il hésitait. Partir ? Rester ? La ville était trop chère, et puis il y avait le travail. The narrative tense stays (imparfait), but the questions and « et puis » are the character's, not the narrator's.

Réécrire pour un autre public : du rapport au communiqué

Mediation is rewriting one content for a new reader: the same paragraph becomes a report sentence, a press release, and a line for a general audience. The facts do not move; the frame does.

Three registers, one fact

Le rapport écrit : le taux a augmenté de deux pour cent au premier trimestre. Le communiqué : la tendance reste maîtrisée. Pour le grand public : en clair, ça monte un peu. Three sentences, one figure, three readers.

Watch out:

 • Pour le grand public : le taux a augmenté de deux pour cent au premier trimestre. → Pour le grand public : en clair, ça monte un peu. Vulgariser means finding the ordinary phrase, not repeating the report.

They re-ask what the course data already contains; no answer here was written by a machine, and a generated drill is practice, never a lesson.

French C2 beyond the drills — culture, reading, listening, idioms

These sections are written for French C2 specifically. The reading text is EkGuru's own; the culture note cites where its facts come from; the idioms and the mistakes list are the ones this level actually trips over.

Culture note

French literary argument plays with understatement: the litote (« ce n'est pas rien ») says more by saying less, and irony often arrives through a borrowed register — a legal phrase in a poem, a slogan in an essay. Reading at C2 means hearing the borrowed voice and knowing who is being quoted, and mocked.

Reading — read this aloud, slowly

« Il n'était pas sans savoir que la chose était délicate » : trois négations pour une seule information, et l'information elle-même reste au bord de la phrase. Le commentaire qui suit cite un communiqué — « une issue favorable est envisageable » — et le laisse là, sans guillemets ajoutés, pour que le lecteur entende le vide.

What it says: 'He was not unaware that the matter was delicate': three negations for one piece of information, and the information itself stays at the edge of the sentence. The commentary that follows quotes a press release — 'a favourable outcome is conceivable' — and leaves it there, with no added quotation marks, so that the reader hears the emptiness.

Listening — one voice, one text

Use the speaker button to hear this text with a browser voice tagged fr-FR; playback starts only after a click. If no matching voice is installed, read it aloud yourself — the rhythm is the point.

Rédacteur: Votre texte cite le communiqué sans le commenter.
Auteur: Je le laisse parler.
Rédacteur: Et le lecteur entend ?
Auteur: Il entend la litote, s'il veut bien.

What it says: Editor: Your text quotes the press release without commenting on it. Author: I let it speak. Editor: And the reader hears? Author: They hear the understatement, if they care to.

The 3 mistakes this level makes

 • Ce n'est pas rien, c'est-à-dire que c'est énorme. → Ce n'est pas rien. A litote explains itself into nothing; leave it standing.
 • Il a dit : « » entre guillemets, ironiquement. → Il a dit « une issue favorable est envisageable » — et s'est tu. Show the irony by silence, not by labelling it.
 • L'auteur est ironique ici (trois fois dans le paragraphe). → L'auteur cite le communiqué sans commentaire. Describe the device once; the reader will hear the rest.

Your task

Write a litote and dismantle one Write a six-line French paragraph in which a plan is described only by what it is not (« ce n'est pas rien », « il n'est pas exclu que »), then rewrite the same paragraph in flat official French and in one blunt line. Finally, take a real French slogan or press release and write the sentence that names what it leaves unsaid without using the word ironie.
