Urdu for kids

Toys, moons, stars and gold stars — Urdu for little learners, big joy.

🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Urdu spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.

Little learners start with love: بچے (children), بچو (baby), سونا (golden one), اچھا بچہ (good child). Childhood floats on affection-words — call every child بچو and watch faces light like دیوالی.

Play teaches fastest: کھیل (play), کھلونا (toy), گیند (ball) — کھیلیں (let's play)! Count throws, name colours, chase and giggle. Play first; Urdu hitchhikes on joy.

School words structure days: اسکول (school), استاد (teacher), سبق (lesson), گھر کا کام (homework). السلام علیکم سر (hello sir) opens every school day — respect and learning, hand in hand.

Sky words spark wonder: سورج (sun), چاند (moon), تارا (star) — چاند دیکھو (look at the moon)! Night-sky Urdu, whispered on terraces, becomes lifelong memory. Teach the sky; the child keeps the language.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on بچو. بچو (bachcho — baby/darling) melts every heart — میرا بچو (my darling) for children, pets and beloveds. Terms of endearment are Urdu's mother tongue; every child swims in them.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Urdu for kids. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Urdu form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. Children
  2. School
  3. Good child

Transfer practice. Make a picture card for one word, say it together, and let the learner point to the matching picture before speaking. Keep the activity short and playful, with a chance to stop. Do not turn pronunciation into a test; encouragement and repeated exposure work better than correcting every sound. Start from بچے (bachche) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.

Context check. For Urdu for kids, “Good child” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.
