Writing Urdu

Letters to lists to letters — writing Urdu from first strokes to full pages.

🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Urdu spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.

Writing starts with flow: Urdu letters join and glide — لکھیے (please write) curves and dots before full words. Trace ا ب پ م ن big and slow; the hand learns shapes the eye already knows.

Tools matter little, mileage matters all: قلم (pen), pencil, finger on steamed mirrors — children trace in notebooks, slates and air. Write everywhere; medium is vanity, motion is learning.

Lists graduate the hand: فہرست (list) — نوٹ (notes), پتہ (addresses), تاریخ (dates). Copy your own نام (name) fifty times, then friends' names, then street names. Familiar words, fresh script: the fastest fluent hand.

Real writing arrives: خط (letters), درخواست (applications), امتحان (exams), گھر کا کام (homework). Write a postcard to yourself in Urdu — short, joyful, posted. First posted Urdu is never forgotten.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on دستخط. Your دستخط (signature) in Urdu script is a milestone — practise it until it flows in one confident motion. Signing Urdu-style on forms, cards and letters declares belonging more than any certificate.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Writing Urdu. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Urdu form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. Please write
  2. Signature
  3. Homework

Transfer practice. Write three examples from memory, then compare each with the page one character at a time. Correct the shape or mark that changed the meaning instead of rewriting the whole row. A photograph of a real label or notebook can become a useful review prompt, provided you have permission to keep it. Start from لکھیے (likhiye) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.

Context check. For Writing Urdu, “Homework” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Check your recall: answer key
  1. لکھیے likhiye — Please write
  2. دستخط dastakhat — Signature
  3. گھر کا کام ghar kaa kaam — Homework

Questions learners ask

How do I start writing Urdu?

Flowing strokes first: Urdu letters join right-to-left — ا، ب، م. Trace big, shrink slowly; لکھائی (handwriting) beautifies with mileage.

What should I write first?

فہرست (lists): shopping lists, word lists, daily plans. Lists forgive grammar, demand spelling, and get used — the perfect beginner writing.

When real writing?

خط (letters) to friends, نوٹ (notes) to self, گھر کا کام (homework) for courses. Real writing to real readers beats copied exercises every time.
