Urdu vs Hindi

Twin languages, two scripts — shared speech, split letters.

🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Urdu spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.

The twins grew as one: اردو bloomed in courts and camps, हिंदी spread across the north. Same grammar, same daily words — Urdu drank Persian while Hindi drank Sanskrit. History in every sentence.

Shared words delight learners: گھر/घर (house), پانی/पानी (water), نام/नाम (name), دوست/दोस्त (friend) — identical in speech. Core vocabulary IS shared; learn one list, own two languages.

Split scripts mark the border: Urdu's right-to-left curves against Hindi's left-to-right headline. مجھے (mujhe — to-me) against मुझे, ہاں (haan) against हाँ — same sounds, different clothes. Drill both scripts; cross freely.

Greetings show both faces: السلام علیکم stands Urdu-warm while नमस्ते stands Hindi-classic — yet each understands the other's instantly. Twins recognise twins; learn either with love and both reward you.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on گھر = घर. Urdu گھر (house) and Hindi घर are the SAME word in two scripts — thousands work this way. Learn Urdu's core well and Hindi speech needs no learning at all.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Urdu vs Hindi. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Urdu form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. Hello (Hindi: नमस्ते)
  2. Money (Hindi: पैसे)
  3. To-me (Hindi: मुझे)

Transfer practice. Write down one useful similarity and one difference between the two languages. Check each claim against the examples rather than guessing from a shared word. Keep the forms in their own scripts and practise saying both before deciding which one belongs in the situation described on this page. Start from السلام علیکم (assalam-o-alaikum — namaste) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.

Context check. For Urdu vs Hindi, “To-me (Hindi: मुझे)” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Questions learners ask

Can Urdu speakers understand Hindi?

Almost fully for daily speech — گھر، پانی، نام، نہیں are near-identical. Formal registers diverge; street speech is one.

Why different scripts?

Urdu writes right-to-left in Perso-Arabic; Hindi writes left-to-right in Devanagari. Same tongue, different dress.

Which should I learn first?

Urdu first for tehzeeb, Hindi script second for access. Each halves the other's difficulty — learn one, get the second at a discount.
