Survival nouns anchor reality: پانی (water), کھانا (food), گھر (house), راستہ (road). Point at each, say it aloud, use it today — پانی چاہیے (I want water). Concrete first, abstract later.
People words warm speech: آدمی (person), دوست (friend), ماں (mother), بچہ (child). میرا دوست (my friend) introduces proudly; ماں calls home. People before things, always.
Describing words add colour: بڑا (big), چھوٹا (small), اچھا (good), نیا (new). Adjectives dance with gender — بڑا بھائی (big brother), بڑی بہن (big sister). Pair-learn each one.
Time and feeling complete the core: آج (today), پیار (love), خوشی (joy), کام (work). آج بہت کام ہے (there's lots of work today) — then پیار اور خوشی balance it. Words for living, not just talking.

Practice: recall, then use
Use this quick recall drill for Core Urdu vocabulary. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Urdu form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.
- Water
- Small
- Nice / great
Transfer practice. Group the words by the company they keep: notice which word belongs with a person, action, place, or polite reply. Make one short sentence using a pair from the table, then recall the pair tomorrow without looking. Remembering a usable phrase is more valuable than reciting an isolated translation. Start from پانی (paani) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.
Context check. For Core Urdu vocabulary, “Nice / great” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.
