Counting in Urdu

ایک دو تین to سو — count, pay and bargain in Urdu.

🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Urdu spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.

One to ten sings: ایک دو تین چار پانچ چھ سات آٹھ نو دس — chant it walking, cooking, waiting. Urdu numbers love rhythm; your tongue learns faster than your brain. Ten numbers, total freedom in every shop.

Teens climb steadily: گیارہ بارہ تیرہ چودہ پندرہ سولہ سترہ اٹھارہ انیس بیس — eleven to twenty. انیس (19) and بیس (20) open the tens; climb daily and teens become trivial.

Tens multiply power: بیس تیس چالیس پچاس ساٹھ ستر اسی نوے سو — 20 to 100. Combine freely: اکیس (21), پچیس (25), ستائیس (27) — the tongue-twisters that prove fluency.

Hundreds rule markets: سو (100), دو سو (200), ہزار (1000), لاکھ (100,000). ڈیڑھ سو (150) and اڑھائی سو (250) charm shopkeepers — halves and quarters in pure Urdu. Money talks; count it in Urdu.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on کتنے؟ کتنے؟ (kitne — how much / how many?) is the most useful question — کتنے روپے؟ (how many rupees?), کتنے بجے؟ (what time is it?). One word, every transaction. Ask کتنے fearlessly; numbers come to you.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Counting in Urdu. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Urdu form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. One
  2. Seven
  3. Thousand

Transfer practice. Choose a practical setting—a price, a quantity, an age, or an appointment time—and use the number in a complete request. Say the number once, pause, and repeat it at a natural pace. Check the script form as well as the romanisation; a familiar Arabic numeral is not a substitute for recognising the local form. Start from ایک (ek) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.

Context check. For Counting in Urdu, “Thousand” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Check your recall: answer key
  1. ایک ek — One
  2. سات saat — Seven
  3. ہزار hazaar — Thousand
