Vowels anchor everything: ਅ ਆ ਇ ਈ ਉ ਊ ਏ ਐ ਓ ਔ — ten pure sounds. Long-short pairs matter — ਇ vs ਈ changes meaning. Chant them in order daily; the mouth memorises what the ear repeats.
Consonants march in families: ਕ ਖ ਗ ਘ (throat), ਚ ਛ ਜ ਝ (palate), ਟ ਠ ਡ ਢ (roof), ਤ ਥ ਦ ਧ (teeth), ਪ ਫ ਬ ਭ (lips). Family by family, feel where each sound lives — Punjabi pronunciation is geography you can touch.
Special letters crown the set: ਯ ਰ ਲ ਵ ੜ ਸ਼ ਖ਼ ਗ਼ ਜ਼ ਫ਼ ਲ਼ — with ੜ (retroflex R) and dotted Persian loans. ਸਕੂਲ (school) and ਖ਼ਬਰ (news) show loans in action. Special letters, everyday words.
Rows grid it all: ਕ ਕਾ ਕਿ ਕੀ ਕੁ ਕੂ ਕੇ ਕੈ ਕੋ ਕੌ — each consonant through every vowel. One row mastered teaches all rows. Read rows aloud for a month; Gurmukhi becomes a friend for life.

Practice: recall, then use
Use this quick recall drill for Punjabi alphabet. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Punjabi form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.
- Letter uda (vowel-bearer)
- Letter oo (long)
- Gurmukhi (script)
Transfer practice. Pick one letter or sign from the examples, trace it slowly, and name its sound before you read a whole word containing it. Then cover the chart and identify the same shape in a new example. This separates visual recognition from pronunciation and helps prevent guessing from a familiar-looking script. Start from ੳ (udaa) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.
Context check. For Punjabi alphabet, “Gurmukhi (script)” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.
