Punjabi pronunciation
Three tones, retroflex ੜ, bold rhythm — speak Punjabi like a native.

The signature ੜ rules: ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ (to read), ਲੜਕਾ (boy), ਕੁੜੀ (girl) — tongue back, flap forward. Minimal pairs drill it: ਪੜ੍ਹ (read!) vs ਪਰ (but). Master ੜ and Punjabis beam; skip it and they still understand, smiling.
Tones sing through speech: ਘਰ (house, falling), ਘੋੜਾ (horse, rising) — pitch shapes meaning. Don't fear tones; children absorb them from bhangra alone. Sing along; tones arrive.
Length carries meaning: ਇ vs ਈ, ਉ vs ਊ — short and long are different letters, different words. Double the long ones fully; clip the short ones crisp. Ears measure; mouths must comply.
Rhythm ties it together: ਹੌਲੀ (slowly) first, then natural speed; ਉੱਚੀ (loudly) for clarity, ਚੁੱਪ (quiet) for calm. ਉਚਾਰਨ (pronunciation) improves with echoing — shadow natives daily, record yourself weekly.

Practice: recall, then use
Use this quick recall drill for Punjabi pronunciation. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Punjabi form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.
- To read (shows ੜ੍ਹ)
- Loudly
- Tone / tune
Transfer practice. Listen to one phrase from the table, wait a beat, and repeat it at an easy pace. Try once more without the romanisation, then compare what you said with the written form. The spelling guide is approximate; focus on a clear, comfortable rhythm rather than forcing an accent you do not have. Start from ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ (parhnaa) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.
Context check. For Punjabi pronunciation, “Tone / tune” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Questions learners ask
The retroflex flap: tongue curls back, flaps forward — ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ (to read), ਲੜਕਾ (boy). Practise flapping daily; Punjabi ੜ is bolder than Hindi ड़.
High, low and level pitch on words with ਘ ਝ ਢ ਧ ਭ — ਘਰ (house) falls, ਘੋੜਾ (horse) rises. Tones change meaning; ears learn them through songs.
Long-short pairs: ਇ/ਈ, ਉ/ਊ change words. Hold long vowels fully double — Punjabi ears measure length precisely.
