Real Punjabi conversation
ਮੈਂ, ਤੁਸੀਂ, ਹਾਂ, ਨਹੀਂ — hold your first real Punjabi conversations.

People anchor talk: ਮੈਂ (I), ਤੁਸੀਂ (you formal), ਉਹ (he/she), ਉਹ (they). ਮੈਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਿੱਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ (I'm learning Punjabi) — gender shows on verbs, proudly. Introduce yourself; conversations ignite.
Questions drive dialogue: ਕੀ? (what?), ਕਿੱਥੇ? (where?), ਕਦੋਂ? (when?), ਕਿਉਂ? (why?), ਕਿਵੇਂ? (how?). ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੋ? (where do you live?) — one question word plus any verb equals conversation.
Politeness oils everything: ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ (please) and ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰਨਾ (sorry/excuse me). ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰਨਾ, ਹੌਲੀ ਬੋਲੋ (sorry, speak slowly) — apologies plus requests, the learner's armour.
Repair keeps talk alive: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ (I didn't understand), ਫਿਰ ਦੱਸੋ (please say again), ਇਸਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਕੀ ਹੈ? (what does this mean?). Broken Punjabi beats silent perfection — stumble forward daily.

Practice: recall, then use
Use this quick recall drill for Real Punjabi conversation. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Punjabi form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.
- I
- What is your name?
- Very nice! / great!
Transfer practice. Turn two rows into a brief exchange: open, answer, and add one follow-up question of your own. Keep the turns short enough to say without reading. In a real conversation, listen for the other person’s pace and leave room for a reply rather than delivering a memorised speech. Start from ਮੈਂ (main) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.
Context check. For Real Punjabi conversation, “Very nice! / great!” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.
Check your recall: answer key
- ਮੈਂ main — I
- ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਹੈ? tuhaadaa naam ki hai — What is your name?
- ਬਹੁਤ ਵਧੀਆ! bahut vadheeyaa — Very nice! / great!
Questions learners ask
ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਹੈ? (what's your name?) — answer ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਰਾਹੁਲ ਹੈ (my name is Rahul). Names first, friendship follows.
ਹਾਂ (yes), ਨਹੀਂ (no) — short, clear, universal. ਹਾਂ ਜੀ adds respect; ਨਾ is casual. Yes-no fluency first.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ (I didn't understand) and ਹੌਲੀ ਬੋਲੋ (please speak slowly). Honesty tunes every speaker to your level.
