One to ten sings: ਇੱਕ ਦੋ ਤਿੰਨ ਚਾਰ ਪੰਜ ਛੇ ਸੱਤ ਅੱਠ ਨੌਂ ਦਸ — chant it walking, cooking, waiting. Punjabi numbers love rhythm; your tongue learns faster than your brain. Ten numbers, total freedom in every shop.

ਉੱਨੀ (19) and ਵੀਹ (20) open the tens; climb daily and teens become trivial.

(27) — the tongue-twisters that prove fluency.

(250) charm shopkeepers — halves and quarters in pure Punjabi. Money talks; count it in Punjabi.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on ਕਿੰਨੇ? (kinne — how much / how many?) is Punjab's most useful question — ਕਿੰਨੇ ਰੁਪਏ? (how many rupees?), ਕਿੰਨੇ ਵੱਜੇ? (what time is it?). One word, every transaction. Ask ਕਿੰਨੇ fearlessly; numbers come to you.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Counting in Punjabi. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Punjabi form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. One
  2. Seven
  3. Thousand

Transfer practice. Choose a practical setting—a price, a quantity, an age, or an appointment time—and use the number in a complete request. Say the number once, pause, and repeat it at a natural pace. Check the script form as well as the romanisation; a familiar Arabic numeral is not a substitute for recognising the local form. Start from ਇੱਕ (ikk) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.

Context check. For Counting in Punjabi, “Thousand” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Check your recall: answer key
  1. ਇੱਕ ikk — One
  2. ਸੱਤ satt — Seven
  3. ਹਜ਼ਾਰ hazaar — Thousand
