Punjabi has two yous: ਤੁਸੀਂ (formal and plural — strangers, elders, officials) and ਤੂੰ (familiar — friends, children, family). English erased this distinction centuries ago; Punjabi keeps it razor-sharp. Every conversation opens with an invisible choice — make it consciously, and make it respectful.
Verbs mirror the split: ਆਓ (please come) versus ਆ (come!), ਦੱਸੋ (please say) versus ਦੱਸ (say!), ਜਾਓ (please go) versus ਜਾ (go!). The -ਓ ending is pure respect — same verb, different universe. Stems bark; -ਓ invites.
Giving and forgiving show the range: ਦਿਓ (please give) versus ਦੇ (give, familiar), ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰੋ (please forgive) versus ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰ (forgive, familiar). Beggars and kings both hear ਦਿਓ — politeness in Punjabi costs nothing and buys everything.
Strangers get titles: ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜੀ (sir), ਵੀਰ (brother), ਭੈਣ (sister). ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜੀ, ਮਦਦ ਕਰੋ (sir, please help) opens any door; barking orders at strangers closes them. Punjabi warmth is earned with two syllables of respect.

Transfer practice. Choose two listeners with different relationships to you and practise the same message for each. Keep the meaning steady while adjusting the form of address or level of politeness shown on the page. A common trap is switching one familiar word while leaving the rest of a formal sentence unchanged. Start from ਆਓ (aao) and decide whether it fits the situation before using it elsewhere.
Context check. For Formal and informal Punjabi, “They / he-she (formal)” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Questions learners ask
ਤੁਸੀਂ for every adult you don't know well — shopkeepers, officials, elders, strangers. ਤੂੰ waits for close friends, children and family. Wrong-side errors embarrass; learners are forgiven, but respect first is always safest.
Use the -ਓ form: ਆ becomes ਆਓ, ਜਾ becomes ਜਾਓ, ਦੱਸ becomes ਦੱਸੋ. One ending, instant politeness — the highest-value sound in Punjabi.
ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜੀ (sir) and ਭੈਣ ਜੀ for slightly-older strangers. ਸਰਦਾਰ ਜੀ, ਸਮਾਂ ਕੀ ਹੈ? (sir, what time is it?). Better than pointing and shouting in any language.
