Mistakes every learner makes in Punjabi

Verb-first sentences, ਮੈਂ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ, ਨਹੀਂ vs ਨਾ — fix them all.

Mistake one: English word order. ਮੈਂ ਜਾ (I go — bare stem, wrong) instead of ਮੈਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ (I go — conjugated, right); verbs wandering mid-sentence instead of anchoring the end. Punjabi is verb-final, always — SOV is not a suggestion, it is the law.

Mistake two: ਮੈਂ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ (I want — wrong) instead of ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ (to-me wanted — right). Punjabi wanting flows toward the wanter; English wanting fires from the wanter. Flip the arrow and dozens of sentences — ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਆਇਆ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਹੈ — unlock at once.

Mistake three: one-size no. ਨਹੀਂ denies verbs — ਪੈਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ (there's no money); ਨਾ refuses offers — ਚਾਹ ਨਾ (no tea for me). Beginners spray ਨਾ everywhere; natives smile and correct. Learn both no's, use each precisely.

Mistake four: rushing sounds — flat long vowels, missed tones, wrong gender endings. ਹੌਲੀ (slowly), ਸਹੀ (correctly), ਫਿਰ (again): the holy trinity of repair. ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ (effort) plus ਅਭਿਆਸ (practice) plus ਸਬਰ (patience) — and ਵਧਾਈਆਂ, mistakes become fluency.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on ਗਲਤੀ. ਗਲਤੀ (galati — mistake) is the kindest word in this lesson — ਮੇਰੀ ਗਲਤੀ (my mistake) disarms every situation. Punjabis adore learners who err boldly and laugh warmly; the only true ਗਲਤੀ is silence.

Questions learners ask

What is the most common mistake?

English order with Punjabi words: ਮੈਂ ਜਾ instead of ਮੈਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, verb first, question words misplaced. Cure: every sentence ends with the verb — practise SOV until English order feels foreign.

Why is ਮੈਂ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ wrong?

Wanting flows toward people: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ (to-me it-is-wanted), never ਮੈਂ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ. One of Punjabi's deepest patterns — experiences come TO you — and beginners fight it for weeks.

ਨਹੀਂ or ਨਾ?

ਨਹੀਂ denies verbs — ਪੈਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ (there's no money); ਨਾ answers no — ਨਾ, ਧੰਨਵਾਦ (no, thanks). Two no's, two jobs, zero overlap.
