France has a long scholarly relationship with India and a substantial community with roots in Puducherry and the former comptoirs, so Hindi learners here are a mix of academics, travellers and families reconnecting. French gives you two real gifts: nasal vowels, which prepare you for the anusvara, and a lifetime of grammatical gender, which means 'the table is feminine' does not need explaining. What French does not prepare you for is aspiration, and the French tendency to put stress at the end of a word will make your Hindi sound oddly emphatic until someone points it out.
French has no h in practice, and Hindi has a great many — ह is a real consonant here, and dropping it turns हाथ into आठ, which is a different word entirely.

Two honest caveats. That figure uses standard time and ignores daylight saving, which moves it by an hour for part of the year in many countries; and some countries span several zones. Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.
