Learn Hindi from Mauritius

Everything below is specific to learning Hindi from Mauritius: what your first language gives you for free, what it does not, when lessons would actually be, and what an hour costs in MUR. Lessons are online, so the tutor being in India is not a limitation — but the timezone and the currency are real, and they are worked out here.

Why people in Mauritius learn Hindi

Mauritius is the rare place outside South Asia where Hindi has official standing in education and public life, and where Bhojpuri is still spoken at home by a large share of families. That produces a distinctive learner: someone who grew up with a closely related variety and needs standard Hindi for school, media or work. The distance to cover is short and precise — pronunciation adjustments, standard vocabulary, formal registers — which makes structured tutoring unusually efficient here compared with teaching a true beginner.

When your lessons would be

Our tutors teach on Indian Standard Time, which is UTC+5:30. Converted to Mauritius, at UTC+4, the teaching window runs from about 07:30 to 20:30.

Two honest caveats. That figure uses standard time and ignores daylight saving, which moves it by an hour for part of the year in many countries; and some countries span several zones. Do not plan around the numbers on this page — the booking page reads your device's own timezone and shows each slot in it, and that is the number that will be right.

What it costs from Mauritius

These five are universal rather than specific to Mauritius — they are simply the ones every beginner needs first. The phrasebook tool has the rest, searchable and grouped by situation.

A note on the Hindi spellings

Devanagari is easy to get slightly wrong when it is typed by hand — a missing matra, the wrong nukta. If something here looks off to you, trust a native speaker over this page and please tell us so it gets fixed — it takes a moment and a real person reads it. Romanised spellings are a guide to the sound, not a standard: there is no single official way to write Hindi in Latin letters.

A realistic first month from Mauritius

  1. Week 1 — sound before script. Learn to hear the four-way consonant distinction before you learn to write anything. Most courses do this the other way round and it is why so many learners read Hindi with an accent that never goes away.
  2. Week 2 — the alphabet, properly. Thirty-three consonants and eleven vowels, grouped by where they are made in the mouth. The explorer shows each with a real word.
  3. Week 3 — sentences, not words. Hindi puts the verb last. Read the sentence structure guide once and then build twenty sentences of your own; the second part is the part that works.
  4. Week 4 — speak to a person. Everything above can be done alone. This cannot, and it is the step that decides whether you continue.

Questions from Mauritius

Can I learn Hindi from Mauritius?

Yes. Lessons are online and one to one over video, so where you are does not limit which tutor you can work with. What it does affect is the hours that suit you both — converted to local time here, tutors teach from about 07:30 to 20:30.

What time would my lessons be?

Our tutors teach on Indian time. In Mauritius that works out at roughly 07:30 to 20:30, allowing for the usual daylight-saving shift. The booking page converts every slot using your own device's timezone, so you never have to do this arithmetic yourself.

How much does a Hindi lesson cost in MUR?

Lessons start at $6 for 50 min, which is roughly 280 MUR at today's rate. Prices are shown in your own currency automatically and converted at live rates.

Do I have to learn the Devanagari script?

No. Plenty of learners start with spoken Hindi and add reading later, or never. If you do want the script, our free alphabet guide covers every letter and there is an interactive explorer that shows each one with a real word.

Want a real person to practise with?

Reading gets you the grammar. Speaking is the part that only happens with another human. EkGuru tutors are native Hindi speakers in India who teach one to one over video — no group classes, no subscription.
