The Tamil alphabet

Twelve vowels, eighteen consonants, one famous ழ் — the whole alphabet, kindly explained.

Tamil vowels (உயிர் எழுத்து — life letters) come in twelve: அ ஆ இ ஈ உ ஊ எ ஏ ஐ ஒ ஓ ஔ, plus the special ஃ (aytham). Short and long pairs — அ/ஆ, இ/ஈ, உ/ஊ — change meaning completely: கல் (kal — stone) versus கால் (kaal — leg). Length is meaning in Tamil; stretch with care.

Consonants (மெய் எழுத்து — body letters) number eighteen: க் ங் ச் ஞ் ட் ண் த் ந் ப் ம் ய் ர் ல் வ் ழ் ள் ற் ன். Notice what's missing: no aspirates, no separate voiced letters. One letter per mouth position, pronounced soft or hard by rule — Tamil spelling is famously faithful to speech.

Vowels and consonants marry into உயிர்மெய் (uyirmei) combinations: க் + அ = க (ka), க் + ஆ = கா (kaa). Twelve vowels times eighteen consonants gives 216 combos plus the 31 originals — 247 shapes from simple, predictable joins. Learn the joins, not the list.

Then the crown jewel: ழ் (zh), the retroflex approximant Tamil is famous for — தமிழ், வாழ்க்கை, பழம். Curl the tongue back without touching the roof, voice it, and feel the most Tamil sound in existence. Natives will grin when you land it; the grin is worth weeks of practice.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on the pulli (்). The tiny dot above a consonant kills its hidden vowel: க is ka, க் is just k. Tamil writes pure consonants with the pulli and syllables without — க் + அ = க. One dot, and the whole reading system clicks.

Questions learners ask

How many letters does Tamil have?

Twelve vowels (உயிர்), eighteen consonants (மெய்), one aytham (ஃ) — 31 letters that combine into 247 total shapes. Sounds huge, behaves simply: learn the 12 + 18 and the combinations assemble themselves.

What is the hardest Tamil letter?

ழ் (zh) — a sound between r, l and d made with the tongue curled back. தமிழ் itself contains it, so every Tamil learner must conquer it. Listen, curl, practise: it arrives within weeks.

Does Tamil have kh, gh, bh sounds?

No — Tamil has no aspirated consonants (no kh, gh, th, bh). One க covers ka, kha, ga and gha by position. Fewer letters to learn, smarter rules to love.
