Tamil sentence structure

Use the Tamil examples to follow who acts, what is affected, and how case markers connect those roles before the verb.

Simple sentences stack three blocks: நான் பள்ளிக்குப் போகிறேன் (I — to-school — go), அவள் பாட்டு பாடுகிறாள் (she — song — sings), நாங்கள் தமிழ் படிக்கிறோம் (we — Tamil — study). Subject, object, verb — build a hundred of these and Tamil skeleton is yours.

Animals make perfect practice: குழந்தை சிரிக்கிறது (the child laughs), நாய் குரைக்கிறது (the dog barks), பூனை தூங்குகிறது (the cat sleeps). Short subjects, vivid verbs, zero ambiguity — describe every creature you meet and SOV becomes reflex.

Time flexes the frame: நான் நாளை வருவேன் (I'll come tomorrow), நேற்று மழை பெய்தது (it rained yesterday). Time words float — front for emphasis, middle for flow — while the verb holds the end. Tense plus time word: past, present, future, mastered.

Identity and questions close the set: இது என் வீடு (this is my house), அது உன் புத்தகமா? (is that your book?), எல்லாம் சரி (all is well). Equate with இது/அது, question with -ஆ, reassure with எல்லாம் சரி — sentences for every situation.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on மழை பெய்கிறது. Tamil weather does things: மழை பெய்கிறது (rain rains), வெயில் அடிக்கிறது (sun strikes), காற்று வீசுகிறது (wind blows). No empty it — Tamil skies act. Weather sentences teach SOV with zero confusion: subject, then verb, done.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Tamil sentence structure. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Tamil form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. I go to school
  2. The dog barks
  3. All is well

Context check. For Tamil sentence structure, “All is well” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Check your recall: answer key
  1. நான் பள்ளிக்குப் போகிறேன் naan pallikkup pogiren — I go to school
  2. நாய் குரைக்கிறது naai kuraikkiradhu — The dog barks
  3. எல்லாம் சரி ellaam sari — All is well

Questions learners ask

What is Tamil word order?

Subject-Object-Verb: நான் புத்தகம் படிக்கிறேன் (I book read). Endings mark roles, so order flexes for emphasis — but verb-last is home.

How do tenses work?

Tense lives on the verb: போகிறேன் (go-present), போனேன் (went), போவேன் (will go). Time words — நேற்று, இன்று, நாளை — frame it; the verb carries it.

How do I ask questions?

Add -ஆ and rise: அது உன் புத்தகமா? (is that your book?). Question words — என்ன, எங்கே, யார் — sit where the answer would.
