Survival runs on nouns: தண்ணீர் (thanneer — water), உணவு (unavu — food), வீடு (veedu — home), பணம் (panam — money), நேரம் (neram — time). Five words, and you can ask for water, find home, handle money and ask the time — the entire first day in a new city.
Movement words come next: சாலை (saalai — road), பேருந்து (perundu — bus), கடை (kadai — shop), பள்ளி (palli — school). Tamil cities move by bus and foot; knowing பேருந்து நிலையம் எங்கே? (where is the bus stand?) saves more time than any app.
Opinions need adjectives: நல்ல (nalla — good), பெரிய (periya — big), சிறிய (siriya — small), புதிய (pudiya — new), பழைய (pazhaya — old). நல்லது (nalladhu — that's good) approves everything from food to plans — the most useful single opinion in Tamil.
Weather and mood close the kit: மழை (mazhai — rain) matters half the year, வெயில் (veyil — sun/heat) the other half. மழை வருகிறது (rain is coming) starts conversations with strangers; in Tamil Nadu, weather talk is friendship's front door.

Questions learners ask
Time words first: இன்று (today), நாளை (tomorrow), நேற்று (yesterday), இப்போது (now). You will use them ten times a day — shopping, planning, chatting — while rare nouns gather dust.
Tamil happily absorbs English — பஸ் (bus), டிக்கெட் (ticket), ஆபீஸ் (office). Use the pure Tamil word when you know it (பேருந்து, நுழைவுச்சீட்டு), the loanword when you don't. Fluency first, purity later.
Nouns first, verbs second, adjectives third. With fifty nouns and the twelve verbs from the verbs page, you can point, ask and survive — grammar glues them later.
