Shopping and bargaining in Tamil

Prices, bargaining and colours — shop in Tamil from first price to deal.

🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Tamil spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.

Prices open every transaction: விலை என்ன? (what's the price?), எவ்வளவு? (how much?), இது என்ன விலை? (what's this one's price?). Listen for the number plus ரூபாய் — repeat it back to confirm — ஐம்பது? (fifty?) — and you are already shopping in Tamil.

Bargaining follows the friendly script: மிகவும் விலை அதிகம் (too expensive), கொஞ்சம் குறையுங்கள் (reduce a little), சலுகை உண்டா? (any discount?). Start walking away slowly — நன்றி, பார்க்கிறேன் (thanks, I'll look around) — and the real price often chases you down the street.

Sizes and colours refine the hunt: பெரியது (the bigger one), சிறியது (the smaller one), புதியது (a new one), வேறு நிறம் (a different colour). Point, name the change, nod — Tamil shopkeepers read gestures fluently and reward attempts instantly.

Colours close the sale: சிவப்பு (red), நீலம் (blue), பச்சை (green), மஞ்சள் (yellow), வெள்ளை (white), கருப்பு (black). சிவப்பு நன்றாக இருக்கிறது (the red looks good) — then வாங்குகிறேன் (I'll take it). Deal done, in Tamil, with a smile on both sides.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on குறையுங்கள். கொஞ்சம் குறையுங்கள் (konjam kuraiyungal — please reduce a little) is the magic sentence of Tamil markets. Said smiling, it opens every negotiation; said with வாங்குகிறேன் (I'll buy it) right after, it closes most. Bargaining respects the dance — never the demand.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Shopping and bargaining. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Tamil form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. What is the price?
  2. The smaller one
  3. I'll buy it

Context check. For Shopping and bargaining, “I'll buy it” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Check your recall: answer key
  1. விலை என்ன? vilai enna — What is the price?
  2. சிறியது siriyadhu — The smaller one
  3. வாங்குகிறேன் vaangugiren — I'll buy it

Questions learners ask

How do I ask the price?

விலை என்ன? (what's the price?) — then எவ்வளவு? (how much?) for everything else. Two questions, every shop in Tamil Nadu.

How do I bargain politely?

மிகவும் விலை அதிகம் (too expensive) with a smile, then கொஞ்சம் குறையுங்கள் (reduce a little, please). Bargaining is friendly theatre — play your part warmly and the price moves.

Which colours first?

Start with five: சிவப்பு (red), நீலம் (blue), பச்சை (green), மஞ்சள் (yellow), வெள்ளை (white). வேறு நிறம் (different colour) shows them all.
