Tamil for absolute beginners
Your first Tamil week: yes, no, I, you, and sentences that survive anything.
🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Tamil spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.
Week one needs eleven words: வணக்கம் (hello), ஆம் (yes), சரி (okay), நன்றி (thanks), தயவுசெய்து (please), நான் (I), நீங்கள் (you, formal), இது என்ன? (what is this?), புரிகிறது (I understand), தெரியாது (I don't know), போகலாம் (let's go). Eleven words, and you can greet, agree, thank, ask, confess ignorance and move — the whole beginner game.
Pronouns branch early: நான் (I), நீங்கள் (you formal/plural), நீ (you familiar), அவர் (he/she formal), அவன்/அவள் (he/she familiar), நாங்கள் (we exclusive), நாம் (we inclusive). Two we's where English has one — நாம் போகலாம் (let's go, you included) is Tamil's warmest invitation.
Quantity words multiply everything: கொஞ்சம் (a little), நிறைய (a lot), போதும் (enough), மட்டும் (only). கொஞ்சம் தமிழ் பேசுகிறேன் (I speak a little Tamil) is the perfect learner's confession — humble, charming, instantly rewarded with help.
Action invitations close week one: இங்கே வாருங்கள் (come here), உட்காருங்கள் (please sit), சாப்பிடுங்கள் (please eat), போகலாம் (let's go). These four run hospitality, the beating heart of Tamil culture — learn them and you stop being a guest and start being family.
