Travel phrases in Tamil

Stations, directions, tickets and toilets — travel Tamil that gets you there.

Destinations unlock with one ending: பேருந்து நிலையம் (bus stand), ரயில் நிலையம் (railway station), விமான நிலையம் (airport), ஹோட்டல் (hotel). Add எங்கே? (where?) and you can find every transport hub in the state — நிலையம் எங்கே? is the traveller's master key.

Directions come in threes: இடது (left), வலது (right), நேராக (straight ahead) — plus அருகில் (nearby) and தூரம் (far). இடது பக்கம் (on the left side), நேராகப் போங்கள் (go straight) — follow the words, watch the inevitable hand gestures, arrive smiling.

Tickets and seats run the journey: டிக்கெட் (ticket), ஒரு டிக்கெட் (one ticket), எவ்வளவு? (how much?), இருக்கை (irukkai — seat). பேருந்து எப்போது வரும்? (when does the bus come?) — asked at every stand, answered with cheerful vagueness. Patience is also vocabulary.

Emergencies and essentials close the kit: உதவி (help), கழிவறை எங்கே? (where is the toilet?), தண்ணீர் (water), மருத்துவமனை (hospital). Hope never to need உதவி செய்யுங்கள் (please help) — but carry it always, like travel insurance in a single word.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on நிலையம். நிலையம் (nilaiyam — station/stand) anchors every journey: பேருந்து நிலையம் (bus stand), ரயில் நிலையம் (railway station), விமான நிலையம் (airport). Learn the pattern once — vehicle + நிலையம் — and every signboard in Tamil Nadu reads itself.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Travel phrases. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Tamil form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. Bus stand
  2. Right
  3. Hotel

Context check. For Travel phrases, “Hotel” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Check your recall: answer key
  1. பேருந்து நிலையம் perundu nilaiyam — Bus stand
  2. வலது valadhu — Right
  3. ஹோட்டல் hotel — Hotel

Questions learners ask

How do I ask where things are?

...எங்கே? (...enge — where is...?) plus a pointing finger. பேருந்து நிலையம் எங்கே? ரயில் நிலையம் எங்கே? One pattern, every destination in Tamil Nadu.

Left, right, straight?

இடது (left), வலது (right), நேராக (straight) — then அருகில் (near) and தூரம் (far). Tamil directions come with generous hand-waving; watch the hands as well as the words.

How do I find a toilet?

கழிவறை எங்கே? (where is the toilet?) — say it clearly, without embarrassment. Every bus stand, station and restaurant understands instantly.
