The Telugu alphabet
Vowels, consonants, gunintalu and the trilled ఱ — the whole alphabet, kindly explained.

Telugu vowels (అచ్చులు) come in sixteen: అ ఆ ఇ ఈ ఉ ఊ ఋ ౠ ఎ ఏ ఐ ఒ ఓ ఔ అం అః. Short and long pairs — అ/ఆ, ఇ/ఈ, ఉ/ఊ — change meaning completely: కల (kala — dream) versus కాలం (kaalam — time). Length is meaning in Telugu; stretch with care.
Consonants (హల్లులు) run five rows deep: క ఖ గ ఘ ఙ, చ ఛ జ ఝ ఞ, ట ఠ డ ఢ ణ, త థ ద ధ న, ప ఫ బ భ మ — plus య ర ల వ శ ష స హ ళ క్ష ఱ. Call it the Italian of the East: nearly every word ends in a vowel, and the script rounds every corner.
Vowels and consonants marry into గుణింతాలు (gunintalu): క్ + అ = క (ka), క్ + ఆ = కా (kaa). Learn the twelve vowel-signs once and every consonant sings the same song — the system is vast but perfectly regular.
Then the crown jewels: ఱ (rra), the trilled warrior of old Telugu — ఱెక్క, కఱకు; and ళ (lla), the retroflex liquid — పళ్ళు, వేళ. Natives will grin when you land them; the grin is worth weeks of practice.

Questions learners ask
Sixteen vowels (అచ్చులు) and thirty-seven consonants (హల్లులు) — 53+ letters that combine into gunintalu. Sounds huge, behaves simply: learn the shapes and the combinations assemble themselves.
ఱ (rra) — the alveolar trill, rolled hard, found in old pure-Telugu words. Modern speech often merges it with ర, but reading classics demands it. Listen, roll, practise.
Yes — in writing: ఖ ఘ ఛ ఝ ఠ ఢ థ ధ ఫ భ appear in Sanskrit loans (క్షమ, ధర్మం). Daily Telugu softens most of them; recognise them in print, relax in speech.
