Breakfast is the glory: ఇడ్లీ (idlee — steamed rice cakes), దోస (dosa — crisp crepe), పూరీ (pooree — puffed bread), వడ (vada — savoury doughnut), all served with సాంబారు (saambaaru) and చట్నీ (chutney). టిఫిన్ చేశారా? (have you had tiffin?) is asked with love — answer honestly, then accept seconds.

Meals centre on భోజనం (bhojanam — the rice meal): rice, పప్పు (pappu — dal), సాంబారు, రసం (rasam — pepper-tamarind soup), పెరుగు (perugu — curd), అప్పడం (appadam — crisp papad). Served on banana leaves at weddings, eaten with the right hand — భోజనం రెడీనా? (is the meal ready?) is the happiest question.

Taste words steer every order: కారం (kaaram — spicy), తీపి (teepi — sweet), పులుపు (pulupu — sour), ఉప్పు (uppu — salt). కొంచెం ఉప్పు (a little salt), చక్కెర వద్దు (no sugar) — with taste words, your plate obeys you.

Drinks and bills close the meal: కాఫీ (coffee), టీ (tea), మజ్జిగ (majjiga — buttermilk), పండ్లరసం (pandlarasam — juice). బిల్లు ఇవ్వండి (please give the bill) ends it; రుచిగా ఉంది (it was delicious) guarantees a smile on your way out.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on బిర్యానీ. Hyderabadi biryani — dum-cooked, saffron-scented, argued over passionately — is not dinner, it is identity. Order చికెన్ బిర్యానీ at any old-city hotel, eat with mirchi ka salan and raita, and understand Hyderabad in one plate.

Questions learners ask

How do I order with almost no Telugu?

Point and say ఇది ఒకటి (idi okati — one of these) — it works in every mess, canteen and bakery in Telugu states. Add దయచేసి (please) and a smile; grammar can wait until dessert.

How do I ask for less spicy food?

కారం తక్కువ (kaaram takkuva — less spicy, please). Telugu food honours chilli deeply — Gongura, avakaya; this one sentence saves sensitive stomachs while keeping every flavour.

How do I praise the food?

రుచిగా ఉంది (ruchigaa undi — it's delicious). Say it to the cook, the server, the auntie who packed your lunch — it is the highest compliment in Telugu food culture.
