Shopping and bargaining in Telugu

Prices, bargaining and colours — shop in Telugu from first price to deal.

🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Telugu spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.

Prices open every transaction: ధర ఎంత? (what's the price?), ఎంత? (how much?), ఇది ధర ఎంత? (what's this one's price?). Listen for the number plus రూపాయలు — repeat it back to confirm — యాభై? (fifty?) — and you are already shopping in Telugu.

Bargaining follows the friendly script: చాలా ఖరీదు (too costly), కొంచెం తగ్గించండి (reduce a little), డిస్కౌంట్ ఉందా? (any discount?). Start walking away slowly — ధన్యవాదాలు, చూస్తాను (thanks, I'll look around) — and the real price often chases you down the street.

Sizes and colours refine the hunt: పెద్దది (the bigger one), చిన్నది (the smaller one), కొత్తది (a new one), వేరే రంగు (a different colour). Point, name the change, nod — Telugu shopkeepers read gestures fluently and reward attempts instantly.

Colours close the sale: ఎరుపు (red), నీలం (blue), ఆకుపచ్చ (green), పసుపు (yellow), తెలుపు (white), నలుపు (black). ఎరుపు బాగుంది (the red looks good) — then కొంటాను (I'll take it). Deal done, in Telugu, with a smile on both sides.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on తగ్గించండి. కొంచెం తగ్గించండి (konchem tagginchandi — please reduce a little) is the magic sentence of Telugu markets. Said smiling, it opens every negotiation; said with కొంటాను (I'll buy it) right after, it closes most. Bargaining respects the dance — never the demand.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Shopping and bargaining. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Telugu form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. What is the price?
  2. The smaller one
  3. I'll buy it

Context check. For Shopping and bargaining, “I'll buy it” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Check your recall: answer key
  1. ధర ఎంత? dhara enta — What is the price?
  2. చిన్నది chinnadi — The smaller one
  3. కొంటాను kontaanu — I'll buy it

Questions learners ask

How do I ask the price?

ధర ఎంత? (what's the price?) — then ఎంత? (how much?) for everything else. Two questions, every shop in Telugu states.

How do I bargain politely?

చాలా ఖరీదు (too costly) with a smile, then కొంచెం తగ్గించండి (reduce a little, please). Bargaining is friendly theatre — play your part warmly and the price moves.

Which colours first?

Start with five: ఎరుపు (red), నీలం (blue), ఆకుపచ్చ (green), పసుపు (yellow), తెలుపు (white). వేరే రంగు (different colour) shows them all.
