Survival runs on nouns: నీళ్లు (neellu — water), ఆహారం (aahaaram — food), ఇల్లు (illu — home), డబ్బు (dabbu — money), సమయం (samayam — time). Five words, and you can ask for water, find home, handle money and ask the time — the entire first day in a new city.

Movement words come next: రోడ్డు (roaddu — road), బస్సు (bassu — bus), దుకాణం (dukaanam — shop), బడి (badi — school). Telugu cities move by bus and foot; knowing బస్ స్టాండ్ ఎక్కడ? (where is the bus stand?) saves more time than any app.

Opinions need adjectives: మంచి (manchi — good), పెద్ద (pedda — big), చిన్న (chinna — small), కొత్త (kotta — new), పాత (paata — old). మంచిది (manchidi — that's good) approves everything from food to plans — the most useful single opinion in Telugu.

Weather and mood close the kit: వాన (vaana — rain) matters half the year, ఎండ (enda — sun/heat) the other half. వాన పడుతోంది (rain is coming) starts conversations with strangers; in Telugu states, weather talk is friendship's front door.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on ఈరోజు, రేపు, నిన్న. Telugu time words pivot around today: ఈరోజు (eeroju — today), రేపు (repu — tomorrow), నిన్న (ninna — yesterday). Master this trio and half your daily sentences assemble themselves — రేపు కలుద్దాం (see you tomorrow) alone is worth the lesson.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Core Telugu vocabulary. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Telugu form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

Questions learners ask

Which words pay off fastest?

Time words first: ఈరోజు (today), రేపు (tomorrow), నిన్న (yesterday), ఇప్పుడు (now). You will use them ten times a day — shopping, planning, chatting — while rare nouns gather dust.

Is mixing English okay?

Telugu happily absorbs English — బస్సు (bus), టికెట్ (ticket), ఆఫీసు (office). Use the pure Telugu word when you know it, the loanword when you don't. Fluency first, purity later.

Nouns or verbs first?

Nouns first, verbs second, adjectives third. With fifty nouns and the twelve verbs from the verbs page, you can point, ask and survive — grammar glues them later.
