Telugu for absolute beginners

Your first Telugu week: yes, no, I, you, and sentences that survive anything.

🔊 Tap any speaker button to hear Telugu spoken. Too fast or slow? Use the speed button at the bottom-right of the page.

Week one needs eleven words: నమస్కారం (hello), అవును (yes), సరే (okay), ధన్యవాదాలు (thanks), దయచేసి (please), నేను (I), మీరు (you, formal), ఇది ఏమిటి? (what is this?), అర్థమైంది (I understand), తెలియదు (I don't know), వెళ్దాం (let's go). Eleven words, and you can greet, agree, thank, ask, confess ignorance and move — the whole beginner game.

Pronouns branch early: నేను (I), మీరు (you formal/plural), నువ్వు (you familiar), అతను/ఆమె (he/she), వారు (they formal), మేము (we exclusive), మనం (we inclusive). Two we's where English has one — మనం వెళ్దాం (let's go, you included) is Telugu's warmest invitation.

Quantity words multiply everything: కొంచెం (a little), చాలా (a lot), చాలు (enough), మాత్రమే (only). కొంచెం తెలుగు మాట్లాడతాను (I speak a little Telugu) is the perfect learner's confession — humble, charming, instantly rewarded with help.

Action invitations close week one: ఇక్కడికి రండి (come here), కూర్చోండి (please sit), తినండి (please eat), వెళ్దాం (let's go). These four run hospitality, the beating heart of Telugu culture — learn them and you stop being a guest and start being family.

Language, culture, and common traps

A note on అవును, సరే and ఊ. Telugu yes comes in three flavours: అవును (avunu — respectful yes), సరే (sare — okay/agreed), ఊ (oo — casual yeah). Learners live on అవును and సరే — respectful, warm, never wrong. Save ఊ for friends.

Practice: recall, then use

Use this quick recall drill for Telugu for absolute beginners. Hide the script and romanisation columns; say the Telugu form for each cue before revealing its row, then check spelling and sound. The phrase-table speaker buttons provide a model when a matching browser voice is available.

  1. Yes (respectful)
  2. I understand
  3. Let's go

Context check. For Telugu for absolute beginners, “Let's go” belongs to a particular setting. A common mistake is to treat an English gloss as universal; read the language-specific note above and ask a fluent speaker when local usage differs.

Check your recall: answer key
  1. అవును avunu — Yes (respectful)
  2. అర్థమైంది arthamaindi — I understand
  3. వెళ్దాం veldaam — Let's go

Questions learners ask

What are the first five words?

నమస్కారం, అవును, సరే, ధన్యవాదాలు, దయచేసి — five words, infinite mileage. Add నేను and మీరు and you can introduce yourself to anyone in Telugu states.

How much should I study daily?

Fifteen focused minutes beat two distracted hours. One topic page, every speaker tapped, five words reviewed — daily beats heroic.

Must I learn the script first?

No — speak first, script second. Roman letters carry you through months of conversation; the alphabet page waits patiently until curiosity pulls you in.
