What is the best way to learn Hindi for a complete beginner?
Learn the script in the first two weeks, learn 100 high-frequency words, and start speaking with a person before you feel ready. Apps are good for vocabulary and useless for speech, which is the opposite of what most beginners assume.
The order that works
- Devanagari, weeks 1–2. It is a logical alphabet, not
thousands of characters, and it takes most people ten to fourteen days.
Skipping it feels faster and costs you months later, because romanised Hindi
is inconsistent and hides the vowel sounds.
- 100 words. Pronouns, to be, to go, to want, food,
numbers. These carry most conversations.
- Present tense only. Resist grammar tables. One tense,
used out loud, beats three tenses you recognise on paper.
- Speak in week three. Not when you are ready. You will
never feel ready.
What each tool is actually for
| Tool | Good at | Cannot do |
| Apps | Vocabulary, daily habit | Hear you, correct you |
| YouTube | Listening, natural speed | Answer a question |
| Textbooks | Grammar reference | Make you fluent |
| A tutor | Pronunciation, speaking, correction | Do the daily work for you |
The three mistakes almost everyone makes
- Learning romanised Hindi instead of the script. The
biggest single time-waster.
- Studying for months before speaking. Produces people who
understand Hindi and cannot answer in it.
- Ignoring gender. Hindi verbs change with the speaker's
gender. Learn it in week two, not month six.
