EkGuruHindi questions

How do you introduce yourself in Hindi?

नमस्ते, मेरा नाम ___ है (namaste, mera naam ___ hai) — hello, my name is ___. Then मैं ___ से हूँ (main ___ se hoon) for where you are from.

The four lines that cover it

HindiMeaning
नमस्ते namasteHello
मेरा नाम ___ है mera naam ___ haiMy name is ___
मैं ___ से हूँ main ___ se hoonI am from ___
आप से मिलकर खुशी हुई aap se milkar khushi huiPleased to meet you

Saying what you do

मैं ___ हूँ (main ___ hoon) — I am a ___. But the job word changes with your gender: a male teacher is adhyaapak, a female teacher adhyaapika; chhaatra and chhaatri for a student.

In practice most Indians use the English word — main engineer hoon, main student hoon — and nobody thinks twice about it.

The mistake to avoid

English speakers say "I am Prakash" and translate it literally as main Prakash hoon. It is understandable, but it sounds abrupt, a bit like announcing yourself. मेरा नाम प्रकाश है is what people actually say.

Learning Hindi and want to say so

मैं हिंदी सीख रहा हूँ (main hindi seekh raha hoon) if you are male, सीख रही हूँ (seekh rahi hoon) if female. This one sentence will get you more patience and slower speech than anything else you can memorise.

Practise this with a teacher

Reading an answer is one thing; being corrected while you say it is another. EkGuru tutors teach one to one from $6 a lesson, and most offer a trial.
