Should I learn Hindi or Urdu?
Spoken, they are close enough that learning one gives you most of the other. Choose by script and destination: Hindi uses Devanagari and is what you need for India; Urdu uses a Perso-Arabic script and is what you need for Pakistan.

Where they genuinely diverge
Not in the market or the taxi — there you would struggle to tell them apart.
They separate in formal registers: a news broadcast, a legal
document, a poem. Literary Hindi reaches for Sanskrit, literary Urdu for
Persian, and at that level they stop being mutually intelligible.
Choose Hindi if
- You are travelling to, working with or have family in India
- You want the larger pool of learning material and tutors
- You watch Bollywood — the dialogue is closer to Hindi-Urdu common ground,
but the titles and captions are Devanagari
Choose Urdu if
- Pakistan, or a Pakistani community
- You already read Arabic or Persian script — that is a real head start
- You are drawn to Urdu poetry, which is a genuinely good reason
The honest answer for most people
Learn Hindi first. More material, more tutors, and the spoken language
transfers. Picking up Urdu afterwards is mostly learning a new script for a
language you already speak — a matter of weeks, not years.
